I cleaned and sanded the groove on the pulleys, changed belts a few times etc. It ended being I didn't follow the sequence in the service manual. I finally left the triangular bracket loose, tightened everything else up then wrenched down on the two bolts on the manifold. No more squeel.

Well, a few things getting done, but not a lot. I got a few additional responsibilities at work that are tying me down some, and have been trying to get the yard in shape since spring has sprung....
The motor is now pretty much ready for paint, I just need to figure out what I am going to use. It will probably be the Dupli Color 1619, but I ordered some 1978 Pontiac Blue engine paint from the AutoColorLibrary that is supposed to be mixed from the original formula and I am waiting for that to be delivered. Also, I sent several pieces off to be plated at Aero Propellor that have come back and look great. This includes the throttle bracket, idle stop bracket and hardware, and EGR holddown bracket. Here's a few pictures...

Well, things got back on track today and we are moving forward again.....
The A/C brackets and compressor all got fit on a dry run, and the rear mounting bracket has been modified to fit over the valve covers that had to be raised to accommodate the roller rockers. We used a die grinder to remove some of the lower portion of the rear bracket and open up the adjustment slot. That combined with spacers under the intake mounting points and it looks like we are good to go. As it turns out, the car did not have the rear bracket when I got it so I had to track one down, and I still need to the rear spacer. MPD is planning to turn one on his metal lathe unless one pops up pretty quickly. The motor is also now painted and looks great. I ended up using the Dupli Color 1619 and am very happy with the color. Most recently I bought a quart of paint from TCP global that was supposed to be mixed from the original formula, and it sucked. It was like a robins egg blue. It was weird that on the receipt someone had penciled in Dupli Color 1608 and OEM 62030. It seemed like they must have tried to match the currently available rattle cans, and did a crappy job at that. Regardless, I am happy with the 1619. Here are a few pictures....The valve covers are temporary until everything is finished because I don't want to damage the original flash chromed W72 valve covers

Suggestion: perhaps MPD could fab you one of those A/C shrouds to keep the factory A6 compressor oil sling off of your nice pristine engine bay? Like these on Houstonian Ronnie Bayers '76 TA   Here's a fuzzy zoom angle for your viewing pleasure |

Yeah, the one on the Black Car leaks like a sieve. Dave and I were talking today, and I think I am going to order a rebuilt compressor from the air conditioning folks at Classic Auto Air as I understand they offer a no leak/spray guarantee. Here is the shroud on the Black Cars compressor.
 The compressor on the Gold Car was a new reman when I bought the car. There was no indication it was leaking, but the whole engine compartment was so filthy it's hard to say for sure.

No question the A6's make a mess. I finished a resto in 2008 with a NOS A6 that was still under pressure when I removed the rear shipping cap. I leak tested the system before charging & had no measurable loss after 2 weeks. So I charged it & the A/C worked awesome. Then, After a couple months & a few very short runs I found oil getting sprayed. Pretty sure it seeps out onto the clutch pulley when not running & gets flung around next start up. very disappointing.
I ended up drawing the system into a slight vacuum & sealed it up. Non-functioning now.  This picture was from before the hoses went on, but same issue you'll possibly be having if you charge it. The guard will keep it off some the hood & inner fender, but the rest is going to get nailed. I had it all over the bright yellow paint. took a while to get everything clean as a whistle again.
