It's been so long since I discarded my old one, I can't remember exactly how it's supposed to be positioned. Anyone have a pic or a description?
I think I know which edge faces which way but I don't want to punch holes in it 'til I'm sure.
I'm assuming the 'open' side faces rearward with the hold down clips punched through the 'foot' of the seal?

Hi Greg, I'm at the office and I'm trying to pull down some pictures from my carbonite backup of home files to my phone. If successful, I'll send some pictures to you during the day, but can certainly send tonight when home. if I remember correctly, the seal opens toward the engine compartment. Yes, the clips punch through the flat area or "foot" as you reference.

OK, just pulled down one file showing fold in seal. This is from the 1-owner 68 GTO (originally purchased in Nov. 67) I picked up a few years ago. Notice the opening of the seal toward engine compartment. I hope that helps.

Yes, I see Kurt. In fact, I installed it last night. Now, another question....Are there any rubber 'bumpers' on the cowl anywhere? I'm speaking of the ones pictured lower left in this photo... The kit I have is just like this one but I don't think the '68 uses these...
What's throwing me is that there was the remnant of one on the driver's side on my car...Someone had sliced the top half of it off. There was nothing on the passenger side..

My car has 2. One on the drivers side and the other in the middle.

Hmmmm....that's interesting tekheavy. Mine had one on the driver's side but further out, and it also interferes with the new cowl seal I installed. Plus, the ones in the kit are taller and domed on top. Funny thing is that someone had roughly cut the top off of the one I removed, making it flat on top like yours.
I'm going to look for telltale holes where yours appear to be. Thanks for the pic!

Actually, if I remember correctly, I replaced mine with aftermarket ones and when I went to close the hood, it was being lifted up in the back by the rubbers being up too high, so I had to take both of them to my grinder and grind about a half inch off both. Not sure if the aftermarket one's are taller than the originals or maybe they're made out of a harder material that don't give as much as the originals.

I know it's not a '68... My '69 has one just like tekheavy's does... but only on the driver's side and I see no evidence of one being on the passenger side ever.

My second one isn't on the passenger side either. It's more towards the center.

Yeah, with the other photo you posted that's how mine is.

Yeah, I did find a hole dead center. It has a screw with a flat washer about the same diameter as the bumper. That's obviously the location for the center bumper. The other hole on mine is where I removed one. The difference is that it is completely to the driver's side of the chicken wire. As far left as it could be and still be behind the cowl seal.
Ben, you might look there and see if you have a small hole almost under the rear edge of the seal.
In the meanwhile, those pics are good enough for me. I'm going to place one in the center and one on the left where I removed the old one. If they give me any trouble closing the hood, I'll just remove them.
I can't see any reason for them but I'm sure GM wasn't in the habit of adding cost for no reason......?

Greg, one of my original cars shows two bumpers, like TekHeavy, installed behind the seal. One is directly in front of the half-circle cutout of the lower window stainless, the other is halfway between the wiper/washer assembly and the horn relay, centered nearly perfectly between the two screws holding down the lower window stainless to the left of the driver's wiper mount when facing car. See pictures below.

Yes, these are much shorter than the ones in your kit

What I'll do is grind the flat bottom until a get a reasonable height to maintain the shape of the top.
What do you estimate the height of your originals to be Kurt? Just an estimate, don't trouble yourself with making another trip out there!
