...spring 1968...I bought a new Verdoro Green '68 GTO conv at Wells Pontiac in Richmond In...they had a pair of new '68 GTOs with a 428 installed on the lot for sale(actually sitting by the service bay doors behind the dealership)...don't know if they did more, just those 2 or anything else about them...one was red, one was dark blue...the salesman pointed them out to me and wanted me to spread the word to my friends...I had a new convertible and a new girlfriend, never gave those 428 GTOs a second thought until a few years ago...Wells also sponsored a race car back then...the only thing I remember being odd was the 428 GTOs both had split /dual exhaust tips on each side of the car behind the rear wheels...sorry, all I remember, it has been a long time, LOL

...Mr Wells was a friend of a friend, I ordered my car from him, he wrote up the order and a afterwards gave me a set of GTO cuff links and a GTO tie clip...at 16 years old, I thought I was a cool cat

I love the "Is that a big block?" question. I sometimes says no it's 2 4s welded together.

As some of the guys with the 67 wire mesh in there 66 grills can attest too, we get some really going nuts thinking we have a 66/67 GTO.... 67 front end and 66 rear. Sure makes em do some walkin and talkin for a while. LOL

Not being versed on all the other makes, I just say "You car looks great, tell me more about it".

It backfired one time at a local show. A 350 Nova owner was practically frothing at the mouth because his car was purchased at Nickey Chevrolet, and he was absolutely convinced this made his car rare and extremely valuable. It was hard get away and every other work out of his mouth was Nickey.

Last week a spectator regaled me with a story about his new '66 GTO. "Yeah, I was in service in Arizona, and I had the engine built by Parnelli Jones. I took it out and was clocked on radar at 179 MPH in third gear." Holy Hell, do these people really think the rest of us are that stupid?

I was walking around a show last week looking at cars, and some guy came up to tell me all about his car collection. When he mentioned his "all original, 15,000 mile 1965 GTO with a room full of trophy's," my eyes lit up and I said "my '65 is right over there." I started asking him questions about the car, and he literally ran away. Car shows attract lots of nice people, and always one or two weirdos.

I had a new experience yesterday with someone who apparently knows nothing about vintage muscle. It was a beautiful day, so I couldn't pass on the opportunity to drop the top and take the long way to work. When I arrived, I parked just outside the office entrance and headed to my office that is located just off the main entrance. Shortly after lunch, I overheard someone in the lobby inquiring about the car, so I made my way to the front for some car talk. The gentleman asked a few trivial questions about the car, and of course, told me that his neighbor had one of these that he sold to purchase a Corvette, but then he hit me with a question that absolutely blew my mind. He asked, with a hint of laughter, "so what does 'The Judge' on the side of the car mean?", as if it were a nickname I was given during my lawless youth. Now call me crazy, but isn't a carousel red Judge one of the most iconic and identifiable muscle cars ever produced? At first, I was thinking this guy was screwing with me, but after a slight pause in the conversation, I knew he didn't have a clue. I took the high road and explained to him the history of "The Judge" and shared the fact that my car is actually a clone before he made the assumption that I was loaded enough to own 1 of the 108 produced. He seemed genuinely interested in the conversation, and left a little more educated on Pontiac history.

I try not to get caught up in all of it. I lived in the era, but I'm not an expert like some of the folks around here.

I do try to humor folks when they ask questions or make know-it-all statements about my TA. I was out a few weeks back and a guy pulled up next to me at a stoplight. He comlimented the car, for which I thanked him. Then he said he owned a 77 SD back in the day. "First year for that hood bird", he said. I smiled and said, well actually there were no SD's in 77, and 73 was the first year for the bird. He gave me an all-knowing smirk and said, you sure about that? Thankfully the light changed.

I was at a cruise night with the hood open and had a guy ask if the motor was a V6. I had 3 tube headers on it at the time and said, yeah, same as the Grand National. They put 2 plugs on the center cylinder for extra spark. He nodded in agreement as he was counting the plugs. I pointed to the alternator and said "See the turbocharger right there?" The guy just nodded in agreement and moved on.

I had another guy pull up to my car in the parking lot next to my car just as I was walking up to leave. He asked if he could take a pic with his cellphone and I said sure. He says to me "This is the car Vin Diesel drove in the Fast and Furious isn't it?" I just nodded in agreement. The guy was happy so why burst his bubble?

Another guy was looking over my car and then proceeded to tell me how he had a 1971 Chevelle 454 LS6 all stock back in the day and ruled the streets. He told me he could pull the front wheels on street tires. I just said, "Yeah, those were fast cars." He asked which motor I had and I told him "455". He says, "Oh yeah, same motor as the 454." I just nodded and said yeah, just a little different ram air setup, that's all."

None of that stuff bothers me.

You should try working a parts counter and listen to the guys with hot rods talk about how much power their cars have. I sometimes have to bite a hole in my lip to keep from laughing. The Ford guys are the best though, sensitive little tulips they are. One guy has a pretty hot 67-68 Mustang fastback drag car. My boss likes to mess with him by saying hey! hows your Camaro running? He gets all red and flips him off. LOL

The good old days when dealers had some leeway and weren't all bound up by regulations and pollution standards. I was 11 when you bought that GTO.

I was asked "Doesn't your GTO have the 442 in it?" this past weekend. Baffled me for a moment then responded with "No, it's a 455" and moved on so I didn't have to answer any more questions from the guy.
