I have to admit I'm envious and maybe a little intimidated by all the high end systems and audiophile knowledge in this thread, but I feel like I ought to join in since I have been spending a lot more time lately listening to all my old albums.

First is my Thorens TD160 I bought in '74 when my brother moved into a dorm room at college and had the gall to take his turntable, that we both shared, with him. Though I still have my Pioneer SX828 receiver I also bought in '74, a few years ago it began distorting badly in the bass range, especially in the right channel so now I'm using a Pioneer Elite A/V receiver and playing through a pair of Klipsch KG3 speakers.

A modest system compared to some I've seen in this thread but I like it.

Now playing is REO Speedwagon's first album, my personal favorite of theirs. Next is a little Deep Purple, then Ten Years After. Later today, I don't know, maybe "Burgers" by Hot Tuna to go with jalapeno burgers on the grill.

The Ten Years After is still one of my favorite albums, but more for road music for windows down driving in a very old Pontiac.

Still though, a very modest system, done right and SETUP CORRECTLY can be very musical.

RichardK I just found a great Shades album in an antique store! Ten Years After is my next acquisition hunt. I hade a bunch in high school. I dig Cricklewood Green. Alvin, I recently got two reel to reel boots from the day of Joni. One is BBC broadcast show and second is a year earlier (71 and 70 I believe). She does vocal stuff that the only word is ethereal aka angelic.

I'm excited - it's been a long time coming. The motor spindle is bent on this one, so I'm waiting on a replacement. Got a new belt coming too.

I've been looking for an early-mid '70s receiver to complement my turntable. Thinking maybe a smaller Marantz (2210-2220) but even those are go for some pretty good coin. Some of the Sansuis look nice too. Any suggestions?

Dont overlook a vintage integrated amp/tuner combo as a possibility,lots of those out there as well.

Case in point,I picked up a really nice Kenwood KA-7300 integrated locally off CL a couple of weeks back,and not too much $$$ either,heck the D7 rack handles I bought off Ebay cost half of what I gave for the Integrated itself.

Was gonna pick up the matching KT-7300 tuner off Ebay as well,but that deal seems to have fallen apart for some reason or another.

Lots of other tuners out there though...

The pre-amp section of that KA-7300 is top notch,and internally it's well laid out,dual power supplies and some nice big power caps,only 65wpc but that's plenty with the right speakers and such.

Just thought I'd menton that FWIW,carry on guys.

I had a 2230 followed by a 2270 back in the day. My vintage system today has a restored and modded St-70 and a PAS 2, but with modern speakers B&Ws. Been way too much improvement in speaker technology to use something of that vintage, but in re everything else, I can find a few things.

I'd still take a Marantz 10B tuner if all our FM stations around were something other than hippity hop, rap and tweet tweet boom boom 120BPM gay bar disco.

OK, a true story from last Sunday. I think I have more weird stuff happen to me than anyone else I know, but after this last experience I was reminded that maybe I need to look in a mirror. Always thought this particular Led Zepp IV album really sparkled and years later I came to know who audio engineer George Peckham was, and the significance of this original "Porky/Pecko Duck" pressing. Also note the 6-sided star in the wizards lamp which was omitted from subsequent releases. Sadly this record has seen more than it's share of abuse though. The usual pops at the beginning of each song from dropping the needle. Even so it was great to reminisce reading along with the lyrics of Stairway to Heaven which are imprinted on the inner sleeve. </br> </br>

Yeah, so after listening to "A Space in Time" I was in the mood for more TYA so I went ahead and played "Cricklewood Green" as well.



Then it was on to the aforementioned Hot Tuna while eating lunch.



After that I was in the mood for something with a little country flavor so I broke out "Doug Sahm and Band" and gave it a listen. Said band including Dr. John, David Bromberg, and Bob Dylan.



After that it was time for a little Todd Rundgren and then the Doors.





Finally finishing up with a personal favorite of mine which is playing right now. The Strawbs, "Bursting at the Seams".



And that will be it for the day since it will soon be time for bed so I can get to work bright and early tomorrow. I didn't get much accomplished today except listen to a lot of good music but hey, that's kinda what Sundays are for, right?

Is there a story behind the vanishing star? Interesting.... My copy has star, but no porky

Ahhh...Zeppelin trivia...one of my favorite topics!

Their final studio LP was "In Through The Out Door", which came in a paper bag wrapper.



The sleeve inside the bag was actually the album cover. They had 6 different cover variations, all of the same scene, shot from different angles:






The inner sleeve (that held the record) had a b&w drawing photo that seemed oddly out of place.



Stories and rumors were quickly passed around that the "swipe" shown on one of the 6 covers meant something. Someone decided to swipe the cover with a wet rag. To everyone's surprise, colors came out, and were permanent.



They did some pretty cool stuff with vinyl albums back then....

Will have to try the "Black Dog" mirror trick, look for the "missing" star, and check out moistening the B&W to see if the hidden color "pops"

Anyone else notice the REO LP cover grill design is same stamped screen that used to be sold @ most every hardware store nck in the 70s, 80s?
