Hi there, heres how i have seen petrol tanks welded. If you take the gas tank out of the car, drain it of gas , get a hose about the size in diameter of a hoover hose, put that hose up the exhaust of a running car and the other end of the hose into the gas tank that you are welding , give it a couple of minuetes and weld away. The tank doesnt fire up as the carbon monoxide replaces the oxygen and as we all no , no oxygen no fire.
I learnt this from a old mechanic over here. I have seen this done to a number of fuel tanks now using this method. Pretty sure it doesnt meet health and safety procedures but like i said. I have seen it done 2 or 3 times now and no problems. Funny tho i have always been wary of what would happen if the running car stalled out. just my 2 cents worth.
