So with all this talk, I put my 78 back on the machine yesterday & was able to get 2 degree's positive caster & .7 negative camber. specs are .06 negative toe already, so I kept the machine happy with that one
I drove it & It does feel a little tighter off center & returns to straight forward a little better. Nothing real dramatic & there could be some placebo effect in my brain as I paying a lot of attention to it. I might bring the camber closer to neutral & see if it changes anything. I will never be railing the car into the corners at high speed, but I do like the feel of a car that wants to go straight when you let go of the wheel. One thing I found bothersome is I found my gear box has a tiny bit of play in the sector shaft. Going to look into that this morning. Never noticed it before......

OK, Fooled around with my car again for most of the afternoon. initally Set the camber to -1.1 & caster at +2. I went for another ride & I honestly can't notice an improvement with the increase in -camber. I am guessing that it might be useful if I was railing around a closed course track? For fear of wearing the tires (even though I hardly ever drive the car) I decided to get closer to neutral. I ran out of adjustment (no shims in front) on the drivers side & then settled for -.4 camber & 2.0 caster. Being my retentive self, I kept messing with shims until I got both sides identical. Let me tell you that this takes some patience on these cars. Especially with A/C!
Newer cars are much easier...... Went for another ride, still handles great. I feel the Caster change is the notable improvement as far as road feel goes. Turns out my steering box was just fine, the play I was feeling is actually coming from the bottom of the steering column. Not sure if there is a bearing or bushing in there, but its a little loose & I can feel it in the steering wheel just off center, each way. Didn't mean to take over another section of your thread Bob, but this info seemed to fit this phase of your project & might be useful?

I'm getting a Car Show sign made for the Gold Car. The guy has given me two variations and I would appreciate a few votes. There are a few typos (W56 for one) and tweaks that need fixed, but mainly is it car top, or car bottom.

Bottom, mainly because the car 'cut out" job is hacked bad at the tires on the top one. Looks great though, nice to have if it can save lots of questions.....
"oh is that a "Big BlocK" ? :P

I also vote for the bottom. I had a display made for a car I showed for a couple years that I need to show you. Its almost exactly like your bottom one. Makes me think the same guy worked on it.
I'll send you a picture, it would surprise you how similar they are.

Thanks, seems unanimous. The typos I caught were the on the wheels and the W56. I also don't really care for the exhaust description.
Took the car to cruis in last night and put about 20 miles on it and man does it drive and run well. It is really a sweet ride and the temps are staying dead on 180 degrees. The only thing that still need some tweaking is the carb at cold idle. The choke isn't coming in like it should and the rpms at cold idle bounce around when the throttle is applied to keep the rev's up while getting it warm. Other than that there isn't much left to do. Almost time to figure out the next project.... |

Bob, I like the bottom one too. Where are you getting this done? I'd like to make one for my car for MCACN.

When you give credit to Bill for your Trans Am I will consider it. How is that project coming along? Quote:
