I have had my best luck by letting the master cylinder just drip. Place the master cylinder on the car. Remove lid, fill master cylinder. When the fluid starts dripping, install lines. Then open bleeders, when they start dripping close. This works 90% of the time.

Pick up a $40 Mityvac from most any auto parts store and you'll never regret it. I just loaned one to a relative that has been battling a spongy peddle on his 69 GTO and after a few minutes using the Mityvac it was fixed. Lots of uses besides brake bleeding as well.
