Congratulations, welcome & I must say that's a spectacular 1st post!
![]() The odds that the original owner spun a bearing or threw a rod in the original motor are very high when you take into consideration the M21 & the 4:33's out back. A lot can happen to a car in 45 years and these cars were built to be beaten on. If you have a chance, e-mail me a pic of your WY stamp and EUN - I've been keeping track of them for years. Also, I'm guessing your car was a Pontiac Plant build? Is your block an As-Cast C118 2506 block or is it ground & stamped with the 2506? An early build like yours would have come with an as-cast block. [email protected]

Welcome to the club! I recently joined as well and have found this site to have a ton of valuable info about these cars. I am still reading old threads with much interest. ![]() I have the sister car to your vehicle. Invoice date May 27, 1968. Verdoro green, black interior, black folding top, 4 speed. It is a project right now....will be starting on it later this year.

The WY motor I have is D248 cast date with a 751408 MU# and there is no serial #. The 2506 is ground and stamped. I have an M21 with a P8E03 code and wondered what codes have been seen in the RAII GTOs built around the 5/31/68 date? Thanks

Page 91 in the '69 Factory Assembly Manual. It's not real clear but you can make out the measurements. You may know this already but the stripes are painted on.

I currently have (two) 9792506 Service Replacement RAII/RAIV blocks.
The first has the as-cast 9792506, stamped SR862xx and has a casting date of C118. The second is cast 979, ground and stamped 2506, stamped SR892xx and has a casting date of F179.

Thanks for the info - I may be wrong but I think that's the first AS-CAST 2506 SR block we've come across. Most that I've seen have been ground & stamped.
Being that it came out of the inventory used for both I's & II's I'm going to guess it was originally ordered for the replacement of a I engine blown with it's 4:33 gears but it also could have been assembled for inventory to be used on a II. The second one from F179 is likely more valuable as a IV replacement than a II but could have been used in a I, II or IV car at any time. The original block from my RA I/Auto car was blown in 1976 according to the original owner so anything was possible. Either of those would be good replacement blocks for the two new cars identified above.

I think just about every SR 400 block I've run across up to this point was ground and stamped - some just the last digit, some a couple and some all digits. Both of my 1970 RAIV SR blocks have just the last digit ground and stamped, and I've seen a few with the entire 9799915 ground and stamped. And several factory 'numbers' 70 RAIV blocks I've seen had the last digit ground and stamped.
I wonder if this 'AS-CAST' SR block might have been sold over-the-counter as a 400 block with 4-bolt mains to someone who was just wanting to upgrade or purchase a high performance 400 in 1968? Or a drag-racer? Guess anything is possible. I wasn't really into Pontiacs at that point (1968) as I was only in the 5th grade..... ![]() A couple years later, I discovered loud, fast Pontiacs. And then it took me a few years to save enough money to start buying them.

If the freeze plugs are removed, can you measure the cylinder wall or block thickness and see if one is thinner than the other? I am curious why the as cast 2506 blocks were discontinued mid way through the RAII production run. Comparing the two blocks you have may provide some clues. |

Split set, D228 & D238, very common from what I've seen.

And the date that started the 'R 96 A' castings.
Unless there is better documentation? |

Does anyone know if RA II GTO's ordered with an in dash tach from the factory would have received a 5200 rpm tach or a 5500 rpm tach? Was a 5500 rpm dash tach available in 1968 with steel blue face?
