Default Shifter Options on 1971 GP?

I just pulled an automatic console shifter plate out of long-term storage. It was out of a 1971 Model SJ. I noted that to the right of the illuminated shift indicator, cast into the plate are the numbers 1, 2 and 3. I Was there any sort of a different shifter available, such as a dual-gate? I am not too familiar with these models. Thanks in advance for your help. Olmanwinter

There is a spring loaded shifter. When you push to the right acts like a ratchet type shifter so you don't go from 1st to 3rd.
I don't know the actual years available.

69 & 70 are like that . I have one of ea. I would think that 71 & 72 would have been the same way.

The shifters that Pontiac used were 2 different kinds. There is the one with the std. shifter & then the one thats in most of the cars Pontiac makes which has the duel shift pattern , so when you push it over to the right it will lock it so you can only shift one gear at a time. Well as long as you keep the pressure on it while you push it to the right. All you have to do is let up on the forward pressure a little & it will allow you to shift it into the next gear.

Rally shifter...GM put it in performance oriented cars..even though GM had a good relationship with Hurst, they hated giving money to them, they made this one that was much like a dual gate....from everything ive seen if youre intermediate has a 400 turbo 69-72, and is console shift, it has a rally shifter..its even listed in factory sales literature..and was optional on other 3 speeds like a 350 turbo

shifter is easy to identify..turn it upside down..if there 2 springs its a rally..

also called a slap stick or bump shifter...the shifters sell well....finding a bezel that still shows the 3 2 1 is hard...the laminate hasnt been repopped for lemans/GTO..i sell many of them for lemans/GTO etc...matter of fact,i sell all i can find..ya just grab the shifter pull it out of park..and if it ratchets to the right..its a ralley shifer...the double springs are another way of ID'ing it

shifter is same between GP and Lemans

my buddies Laguna S3 has one stock from the factory too...

its a well know secret...among GTO fans...not many people even realize they have it if they get a Lemans etc for the first time..until they are shown how it works..neat piece

Thanks for everyone's response. Sounds like it is a pretty normal and average part. You never know if you don't ask.

Thanks, Olmanwinter

My 73 was an auto originally & it came with the duel shifter. I even had to show a good friend of mine that it worked that way & he has had several GTO's. He didn't know they were built that way & he had one in one of his cars.
