looking at a car 73 formula n cowl tags states trim is 233 , cant not find what tis is

There were some oddball ones that were not listed in the resto guides..

Yours may have come with black interior and RED carpet...

Transamric will chime in...he should know the codes...as I believe he has one...

It's Saddle.

74 is when they went to some weird numbers/combo.

Drop the first number and add a 1 to the end of the remaining numbers.

Most sources that have the color codes show 331 for example of Saddle.
Do as Mike said, drop the '1' add '2' to the front of the number. 233 for Saddle

1972 to 1974 (at least) the color codes stamped on the cowl tag were different than what was on build sheets or PHS. (UPC codes?)

I also have some weird codes for 1974 were it seems they may have changed during the year?

1973 Codes:
321 - White (std trim) - 232 on cowl tag
361 - Black (std trim) - 236 on cowl tag
and the saddle.

On the 1st 1974 codes, my 74 TA had 209 code on the cowl tag.
(red custom buckets)

Most of the 74 cowl tag pics I looked at had the 2nd set of codes.
But most were later TA's.

Any early 74 cowl tag codes with the different codes than the 2nd set?

Actually it's the reverse of the '1' add '2'.
If the trim tag (Fisher Body) reads ST 73 and TR 233 under it (you would drop the first number (2) and add a number (1) to the end of the trim code) to get 331 which would be the std. Saddle in '73 for Firebird. http://www.gt-37.org/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=580

John, I don't know where your early '74 numbers came from. All my cars relate to the 2nd set of '74 numbers.

Two possible explanations that I can think of for the 209 code.

1. Coding error.

Assuming this is not your post and/or not about your '74 TA, here is another guy claiming an odd Trim code on his '74 Formula Data Plate. He also says his has the Custom Red interior.

But he claims the Code on his Data Plate is 208. I wonder if it is a misread? Would be interesting if you can track him down and compare Data Plate notes.

2. Could this possibly be a code to indicate an optional Seat Mix Trim code or Appointment Mix Trim code? I suspect not, but throwing it out there. Here is a link to a good list of the Trim codes and availability of the Seat Mix combos and Appointment Mix combos.

Has at least one error, for the Custom Red it shows code 911. Should show code 901, as it is correctly identified in the "Mix" choices.

Elsewhere, I saw a '74 Data Plate that coded the Appointment color even though it was not an optional Appointment Mix trim. The code for the Appointment color was coded by 3 alpha characters, and apparently shorthand for the Appointments color used (BUE in the case I saw, Blue Interior Trim all the way).

Did all '74 Data Plates code the Appointment color this way? That would work for the "standard' Trims and the Appointment Mix trims. But how did they code the Seat Mix trims?


Your 209 code could be an early coding that was abandoned. If so, you'll need to collect Time Built code data along with the codes.

If the other guy misread his Trim code and it is actually 209 same as yours, I'm still guessing it was a mistake.

Maybe a dyslexic relief man (or not very bright) who was trying to code it using the '73 rules. Dropped the 1 at the end, but instead of adding the 2 at the front to get 290, he transposed the 90 to get 09 so when he added the 2 at the front, he got 209.

It would make some sense that the '73 rules were used on very early builds.

In fact, you have to wonder why they changed from the '72/'73 practice of dropping the last digit and adding 2 at the front to dropping the last digit and adding a 5 at the front in '74.

Or why they didn't just use the actual Trim Sales Code rather than encrypt the Trim codes the way they did on the Data Plate in the first place.

But I really doubt they intended to encrypt them by transposing the 2nd and 3rd characters. For that, I have to believe somebody just transposed the nos. by mistake. JMO, I have no other evidence to offer.

I looked through a ton of 74 tags and only found I think 1 or 2 like mine and they were 209.

Mine has BLK for the appointments.

It was Custom red seats with everything else black.

John, I did revisit this and looked thru a couple hard drives. I found I kept a picture of a trim tag w/a 206 on it, 05B car. No other pictures tho. May as well throw them back on there as they were used for sure.

John, I'm glad you put it back in. When I saw your reply last night, I figured 209 MUST have been related to the Seat Mix option that you described.

Your car has Black Appointments but it ISN'T an Appointment Mix, rather it is a Black Interior (with standard Black Appointments as typical of a regular Black Interior) but with the Red Seats.

The guy in that other old Forum thread thought he had Red Seats. He couldn't figure out exactly what color they were. As it turns out, somebody may have dyed the original White Seats as his 208 Trim Code meant that the car had a Red Interior but with White Seats.

Yours and his had rare "Seat Mix" interiors. Very cool.

As I wondered in my initial post, how would they have coded the Seat Mix option. Now I know!
