My 66 GTO has some rot in the upper windshield channel and actually goes about 1" into the roof area in a couple of spots. I'm going to look for a donor piece and am wondering if any 66-67 A body will work? I know the chevelles roof skins are different towards the back window, but might be the same near the windshield? Also, does the donor piece have to be from a 2 door hardtop or will a post work? Thanks!

I may be wrong but I think if your just using the skin it'll work.

I need about 2" wide roof skin and upper channel all the way across. I'm betting it has to be from a hardtop pontiac, hopefully someone here may have run into this before. Thanks!

Yeah I'm interested because I'll be in a similar situation if I can find a donor for my 67.

They make reproductions if that is a option. They come from Taiwan so you may want to ask around to see if they fit or not, its always a gamble with these overseas reproductions. |

According to the reproduction piece it fits a hardtop or post so when you find the small piece your looking for should work from either type of car.

I would like to know how the Chev roof at the rear is different than a Pontiac?
If the Pontiac and Chevelle use the same front and rear glass how is the Chev different on the top skin?

the Malibu/Chevelle roof is the same, it's the chebby A body sailpanel area, rear window opening and catwalk that are different.
back to the OP, if all you need is a few inches of solid roof from the window channel back, you could source it out of a 4 door roof. Have provided that section before to '66 and '67 owners that spliced the piece into what was their rusty front edged roof.

Agreed the sail panel on a Pontiac is longer(wider) than a Chevelle. Therefore the panel from rear glass to trunk lid is deeper on a Pontiac than on a Chevelle.

I put a repop Chevelle roof on and the back window area is not right I have not installed the glass yet or trim. I will be tight. I have two roofs off 67 Pontiacs and I live in iowa if you want to come get one but the have some rust right in the well area but a patch kit should fix that. If you buy the repop and just use the front you would be ok.

I purchased a front roof section from a fellow P/Y member just last year. My 66 roof around the window and the A-Pillars were completely rusted out and needed to be replaced. Not to hard a job, just make sure you use a bunch of reinforcements (cross car & top to bottom) welded in place to keep the roof from springing our of shape if you have to cut out the inner reinforcement.
Good luck,

I used an 67 Olds Cutlass rear channel for my 67 GTO and it worked beautifully. Cutlass had both qtrs. cut off low and it made a good donor for what I needed. irgoatmike
