Here's a couple pictures comparing the OER #5 to the OEM paint, and another picture that compares OER #5, OEM and Tiemann #4. The difference between the OER and the OEM is pretty subtle. It is definitely a shade or two lighter, but that may just be lot to lot production variations.

I got your samples in the mail. Thanks.. I think of the samples you sent, OEM and Tienmann are the closest. I still like OEM best, but it appears this discussion will end up being personal preference vs actual definitive results. I guess we can all agree some colors are way off, but this is such a strange green blue color, it is quite difficult to get dead on. OEM makes some of the best colors in the industry. Expensive yes, but as we see here, they do considerably better job than most $15 can paints do at color matching. I have mentioned this a few times, will again.. I don't quite get all the discussion about the 3 can minimum or the cost when we are talking about 20k++ restorations vs <$100 of engine paint..Just seems misplaced to me.. Anyway, BWB thanks for the test.. personally..I would leave it be now and stop taking new colors to test.. I believe we have concluded which colors best match..

Did the '72 housings have no flat spot on the side unlike the '74s, which did (I know they look nothing like a '70)?

My report, none were a match.
HFR I don't believe the 72 thermostat housings had the flat spot.I know 1971 did not..

Thanks Bill. The differences in color between the cast iron intake and the aluminum housing were significant so it had me questioning it (I'll probably pull the housing anyway to see if the original thermostat is under there as I don't remember it ever being changed out).

Sample # 6 "OER" arrived today. Tiemann still looks the closest to mine. Since my memory is fading as my age goes up, I've already put all 6 samples in my trunk before I can forget to bring them.

Default OER engine blue

I received my OER engine paint and in 2 days I was able to reshoot the top and front of my engine..for me, I definitely like it more now(formerly AMES,then Plasti Kote)..and it is right there with a close match to the other top picks..if an engine is out of a car you can do what you like..in the car and an unexperienced painter..OER gives me a shot at dancing with the big boys

Not sure if my eyes are playing tricks on me put if I look at the two pictures of the rad cap on post 137 it does not look the same ,stroll down to post 137 and have the two pictures on the screen so bottom and top of pictures and the top one looks darker and if I look at the picture in the post 146 the cap looks lighter in color. I guess you have to see the samples in person to see the right color of samples or the right color of cap.

It's the same oil filler cap. #137 was taken on an overcast day and #146 on a sunnier day. Even in person different lighting changes my opinion of which looks closer. At MCACN most thought OEM, OER, and Tiemann were all acceptable.

Pepi - I'll look and see what I can dig up and let you know by PM. In my opinion, it's pretty much narrowed down to three paints. For rattlecan paint you have two choices - OEM and OER. OEM is a 3 can minimum at about $70'ish per can. It is darker than the OER and a little more green. The OER is $16 per can with no minimum. If your going with bulk paint gun applied then the Tiemann is it. Each has it's proponents. In this thread from post 139 on there is a pretty good comparison of these 3 paints. I have just noticed, however, that at that point the paint fumes must have been overwhelming me and I started to refer to sample 5 as OER and the unnumbered sample as OEM. The order should have been reversed. I did not test the VHT.

On the pictures below of the Black Car, the engine was painted with OEM by NJSteve, and I reshot the valve covers with OER to freshen it up. You can see that the intake is slightly darker with more of a greenish cast.

Okay, thanks. I don't know if I'll need the samples. I am going to have the wife pick up a can of DE1610 by dupli color tonight and test it against the oil cap. all I have to paint is a water pump. Don't want that to stick out too bad. I suppose I could call the engine rebuilder or the shop he worked at almost 20 years ago and ask them what they would have used or if they have anything laying around that I could use to match up.

I'll let you know if I need the samples to see what matches the paint color they used. Like in that other thread I posted in, I always thought the original was more greenish than what the engine got repainted in. For a while there I thought it got painted the earlier '73 color instead of late '73. But now that I look at it more, it doesn't appear that light/powder blue.

Thanks,
Pepi

Pepi, Do you still have your old water pump? I've posted this before. For an extra charge "Carquest" will send back your original pump and have it rebuilt and returned to you. You'd probably have to tell them not to strip off the paint.

Thanks, actually this pump had been replaced, and it doesn't fit with any date codes. I don't remember the vane impeller whether it was large, small, shaved vanes, the gap a bit big I do remember that. Thanks to another fellow member, I got one with the right date code, large 8 vane that hadn't been shaved down, but the whole thing was rusty. So I had that rebuilt with good clearance with the divider plate. So that is what I need to paint, it had been bead blasted to clean up all the rust.

Thanks though for the information about carquest.

Just looking through a catalog and the OER paint looks like it will be the match. I'll check out the DE1610 tonight and if not I guess I'll order a can of OER to paint the pump.

So Bob, I will not need those samples. Thanks though.

Just got done painting the pump with the Dupli color DE1610. Not too bad, whether it is because it is fresh paint compared to the oil cap which is 18 years old and 6000 miles on it, but it looks a little greener that the oil cap, but more of what I remember the engine having before rebuild and repaint. It is going to be so low I hope it doesn't show difference too bad once pump is installed.

So my car was built the 4th week of December 1972 (1973 Formula). So what is the correct color to use... 1972 blue I am assuming. My understanding is that was used through 3/15/73, correct? Or am I confused.

So, as of this date, what is my best bet for a correct color match?

So I ended up going with the OER K89210 and I'm really not sure about this shade. I understand it has a greenish hue to the blue but to me these is almost no blue to this color at all, it basically a teal green. I know it's tough to judge paint colors over the internet, but does this look right?[IMG][/IMG]
