I did that same thing when I was about 16, on New's Year Day, in a driving snow with my sisters holding the home made wooden structure!! That was on my 64 Impala SS convert.

On a family vacation to Wally World, we stopped at his speed shop around this time. I was very young, but I knew who he was because both of my older brothers were into drag racing. Don actually thought I was a good kid because I called him "that Swamp Rat guy". He asked me if I wanted an autographed 8x10 photo of him, or a record album. I graciously accepted the record album, which I still have to this day. ![]() Mike

I have a pretty close up photo of the engine in that version of the Rat I could post.
Seemed like a nice guy when I talked to him too. Got a picture of him in a match race against Shirley somewhere. |

Gee... I don't see Don in that picture. When I first met him in 1961 he appeared older than the guy in that photo.

Hmmm...well I don't know what to say. The photo came from National Dragster, and identified him as Don Garlits behind the counter, and it's his Speed Shop, in 1971. Sure looks like him to me.

One of the most bizarre creations I've ever seen, a 1959 Chevrolet with a reversed body, created in 1973 by Phil Garner.
