JC, no I have not received them as of yesterday. I thought he was going to drive them up to me and he wanted to pick up your block for polishing.

Going to let you inspect the polish quality, then I will send the block directly to him.

RAIVZ, I was wondering if ANY of his heads are out there and working. You would think we would have heard of some combos by now.

My McCarty RA-V are working just fine holding down the combinations of cardboard boxes I put them in, they haven't moved at all

Seriously, Don's DCI RA-V heads look awesome. I know the majority of you are looking for N/A time slips, unfortunately I'll only be able to provide you with some N/A dyno numbers.

Yeah, what's everyone been up to, any progress on the RA 5 builds?

Progress is being made slow but sure. Here are a couple of pic's of some intake manifold tops I had made for dyno testing. I also made some phenolic spacers to increase the plenum volume. The tops are made out of polycarbonate so we can ad some dye to the fuel, and use a black light to see whats going on in there. Ed Page is probably going to be the first to dyno with the new tops and spacers because he is the closest to being ready. I am sending theses pieces out to him today. Ed will be using the single Dominator top and spacers for his dyno session. I'm hoping Ed will be able to get some video of the wind storm going on inside the intake when he dyno's. This information will help him and anyone else using these parts in their builds. That is of course if we can actually see what's going in there LOL. I'm sure Ed will expound on his results when he gets them.

Does anyone know of a protective coating that can used on the polycarbonate to protect it from fuel? I'm pretty sure it's going to milk up or yellow if left exposed.

What happened to your single plane intake? The one with just one carb on top.

That's not my intake design in your pic. I have only had the intake in my pic's and it is designed for 1x4, 2x4's, 3x2's, FI plenum, or a blower.

I think If you use product that has had the hardening done to the surface -- like the windows sold for drag cars, it would hold up much better --I think its called Rino but not sure.

Lexan Polycarbonate sheet with the Margard name has a hard coating which should provide some chemical resistance. The only concern would be the edges after cutting.

Don I noticed there are tubes running in the backs of the heads & I guess I know there for oil return,?? But do you have to have them there to keep the oil in the pan?? Also Is it possinble to run a RA V on the street, & if so would it hold up to reg. street driving & a little bit of track time but mostly street ?? Is it tame enough to drive it on the street. I would like to think so as I have been thinking that I'd maybe like to put a V in my 73 GTO & be able to drive it on the street. If so can it be driven on the street with say 93 gas instaed of a mix or even some kind of race gas, which I don't want to do. I know I've asked a few questions but please let me know. Thanks Rex.

Rex,a V is just another air pump! They are no diff than any other engine! They just have very large lazy ports. They are usually weak on the off idle untill vel gets up.I have been driving factory Vs with port flo from stock 315s to close to 400 for 20 years.I have found for street driving a single plane intake is a challenge.Cant comment on Dons yet but cant see them being much diff.Would be like driving almost any 400 CFM head with a single plane intake on the street. They like CI and RPMs.Im driving a 366 NASCAR V on the street now so I have the worst of all conditions, lazy ports, too much cam and not enough CI.Putting a factory dual plane intake on it REALLY helped.I cant see Dons heads having any issue with street driving if you build it for that end.JMO,Tom

Actually Tom I was worried about low speed drive ability at first too because of the factory RA5 engines I built. They had no torque until about 4,000 rpm even on 455's. The throttle response is lazy and not what I would consider good. The factory heads on the flow bench are lazy and turbulent as well. My heads have incredible low end torque and are very responsive. Definitely not lacking low speed torque on the 455 I just built with my heads. I spent allot of time with computer aided flow analysis shaping and designing my intake ports for air speed, and it paid off big. A really good indicator of cylinder head efficacy is the amount of timing an engine needs. My 455 with 10-1 compression only wants 24-26 degree's total. When I first fired the engine we had just put the distributor in to get it close. When the engine warmed up and I could rapidly accelerate it. I was pretty impressed with the throttle response and thought wow this thing revs pretty nice. After checking the timing I thought my TDC mark was off because it only had 10 degree's total timing. After I bumped the timing up to 28 degree's it was like it had nitrous when I hit it. The air speed in my heads is maybe a little to fast for high rpm engines, but the good news that can be remedied with porting. I know this is my product and your going to say I'm biased, but facts don't lie. Air speed is above normal when flow testing, throttle response on an intermediate size engine is quick, and torque in the car is awesome. Here is a video's that I have already posted, but maybe some have not seen yet. My chassis car has 4.10 gear and 34.5/17W slicks with a pro 4 link and hooks hard. The burnout I did is on dry pavement in high, not low gear and just off idle. Granted this is not at the race track on a treated surface, but it still gives you an idea of what this engine makes for torque. Another note, this is with 90 octane pump gas.

Rex,
My RA5 heads are definitely street-able and can be used on a factory block with a minimum bore size of 4.150". Watch the video I just posted above and notice the throttle response the engine has. This is one of the quickest revving engines I have built besides some blower engines . Throttle response is a good indicator of air speed and engine efficiency. If you have any questions or would like to come see these in person. You are more than welcome to call or stop by.

I put oil drain back tubes on this engine because I wanted to make sure all the oil will get back to the pan when I race it. You do not need to do this for a street application.
Thanks,
