LOL, I agree! Jim was still tinkering with his combo right up to time he decided to become less active in his hobby!

I went 11.98 @ 109 @ 3680 w a 9.3-1 463 220 cfm dport.
xe284 dynod at 443 hp and yes it went flat at 4700 rpm.

So with a better cam or springs it would have run better.

Ruh-roh..the dreaded XE word! I've used that cam before in a few builds. It fits good in compression challenged 455's. Has a great sound and as you know needs a bit more valve spring. Nothing at all wrong with 11.98 @ 109. I would think the mph is down because of the springs. Shim them and let us know how much you pick up!

Idle was very noticeable.

PLEASE do not turn this into another XE bash thread. I noted that to indicate what a low compression car is capable of.

the 284xe worked well in my 455 with stock 48's. I switched to 96cc,9.3:1 compression, 6x-8 heads,so will it work with that cam as well?
rpm intake,850dp,3000 converter,3.50 gears.

IMO it would be a pretty good combination. The XE cams close fast and help build cylinder pressure. I feel the XE284 is a decent choice with a 9:1 compression 455. Your converter and gear will match up good with that cam. You also have a good manifold and carb.

The drivetrain is pretty much done, the 9" depleted my finances. The body is stuck in body shop hell. Lol
My goal was always to get my heap to run as fast as your brothers iron 400.
Being a 455,it should.
Lots of goals, slow to get there, but i haven't given up hope yet.

I have a ealmost exact duplicate of the "of" but a bullet grind. I am also running the crowed H.I.P.P.O lifters. I have the intake set at .006 and exhaust set at .008 cold. What is the lash everyone recommends?

I think the consensus is going to be .006 on both. I just set my lash a few days ago and set it at .005. but am open to suggestions as well.

I had an almost stock 400 with #48's & it ran ok. I could get 13:02 @ 106 from it. When I decided to go faster I built a 462 (455 + .30) with new gears, 3:73's. I am running an M-22 now with the 462 E-heads right out of the box, a Crane blue print RA IV cam RPM intake & a Q-jet I reworked (800 cfm) RA round port exhaust & with almost no tuning, just what I did from the start to make it run correct, timming & carb adjust. I thought I did a good job of it & it went 11:77 @ 116. It idles at 800 rpm's with a good sound out the back of the exhaust & I can go just about any where with it I drives as even as it did when it was new. I have a few bucks in it But for what I have in it & the way it runs I love it. I don't have any fancy tunning involved in it & I can run on 87, but if I want to run it hard now I have to use 91 or 93 if I can find it. It went the 11:77 on 89 octane because thats what was in it when I got over to the track. I feel my biggest & best upgrade was the E-heads. Also this build is a FTC to.

Can you post a photo of the cam card?

I agree. I would have been perfectly happy with my SFT/KRE combo if the cam didn't show early signs of failure. That said, I was not going to find myself in the same position again so once I decided to go roller, I wanted a cam that had characteristics similar to a RAIV cam and the OF seemed to offer slightly better performance. I am not expecting a ton more power out of this investment, just elimination of the need to mess with the oil with an update to a more modern cam.

in regards to heat expansion, aluminum heads/iron block and the hybrid valve train, I too (like others) thought that lash would DECREASE (or close up) with heat, but is exactly the opposite.
so I set the lash cold at .003".....then checked them again hot.
The result was the recommended clearance of .006".
Valve train is virtually quiet now.
