I'm a pretty serious WWII aviation buff and I've never seen this photo in any books, documentaries or otherwise. Do you have any info on it or know of its origin? Those are definitely P-40 Warhawk fighters like those used by Claire Chennault's AVG Flying Tigers in Bruma in the early days of WWII. They saw action in North Africa as well as in the Pacific and Europe before being replaced by the P-38 Lightning, P-39 Airacobra, P-47 Thunderbolt and the fabulous P-51 Mustang.

I'm a WWII av buff as well and I've never seen it either. Mixed insignias are visible. There's a British roundel on the one in the background on the far left and an American star on one about the same distance back on the right.
They are later the model P-40 design... E models perhaps.
The Brits were using lend-lease P-40s before America even entered the war and they were used by practically all of the Allied forces right through the end of WWII. Although outclassed by almost every other fighter by then, it was a solid, rugged design and still had plenty of use left in it.
Aesthetically, I've always preferred the early model B as used by Chenault's original Flying Tigers, the American Volunteer Group (AVG).

Is the owner of Don Gay Pontiac the same guy as Don Gay the bull rider?

I'm sorry, but I don't know the answer to that question.
