I know.
Supposedly 1974 was the first year of IROC, and Porsches were used. Edit: I've also read conflicting information tonight that says the Porsche was run in '73 and the Camaro in '74. I believe the first year (1974) they used 1973 Porsche Carrera RSR's, the second year (1975) they used 1974 Camaros.
Here's a great photo. How would like to see this group in your rear view mirror? From 1979 : Mario Andretti, Cale Yarborough, Bobby Allison, Alan Jones (F1 Champion), Tom Sneva, and Neil Bonnett.

I wonder what became of all those IROC built cars that were made over the years? IROC was such a great idea even if it did seem to favor those guys with stock car type experience. However, they should have run a season or two in some kind of open wheel car to balance it out a bit.

Another great photo. In the early years (1970's), they only ran at a few tracks. Michigan and/or Daytona (superspeedways), and Riverside (road course) were usually on the schedule.
Here's Richard Petty, A.J. Foyt, and Brian Redman (SCCA driver) at Riverside in 1976.

In 1969 my parents bought a new Butternut Yellow Impala just like the sedan on bottom. It had black wall tires and yellow wheels with dog dish hub caps, the same black body side molding with anodized side window and wheel opening trim.
It had a 2 bbl. 327 and a Powerglide, and I remember the only options being A/C and power steering. Manual brakes, black cloth interior, AM radio. $99 a month for 36 months. Three days out of factory warranty and the water pump let go on a trip. |
