Megaphone exhaust ... wonder if they used Helmholtz formulas to design them.

I think they were designed to clear out the burnout area.

So, Linda Vaughn or Jungle Pam?

Personally, I think either one is a winner.

They were design proposals to offer a line of performance Pontiacs under one banner called Formula X, similar to how Pontiac marketed the GXP line decades later (Bonneville GXP, Grand Prix GXP, Torrent GXP, Solstice GXP, etc.). The Formula X idea was scrapped, but some of the styling cues found on these three prototypes appeared later.

The 1973 Ventura Formula X styling ended up becoming the base for the 1974 GTO. The 1973 LeMans Formula X foreshadowed the styling of the 1977 Can-Am. The 1973 Firebird Formula X used a combination of Trans Am parts such as T/A fender extractors and shaker hood.

The red, white, and blue paint scheme was not necessarily intended to cash in on the then popular 1976 Bicentennial craze, but it would have fit in well with all the other special patriotic editions that other manufacturers were releasing.
