Have you noticed that when the "light" starters run backwards, raise their arms over their heads and get the flashlight centered between the two cars and turn on the light, if you watch enough shows you can see when the light is coming on and anticipate the light pretty closely every time.

So if you watch for the "centering of the light" and leave on that, the time it takes for the car to leave is only a small bit after the light comes on?

Kelly has got that 'TELL' (as they say in poker) figured out pretty good. He is always the first to leave, always.

But I give him credit for knowing that his car will leave the same way every time and by watching the filming of other racers during the show he can see when the 'TELL' is there vs the light coming on.

Gosh Tom you just taught us bracket racers something that most....if not all have known like forever.......BUT that only works on an incandescent bulb, doesn't work on a LED bulb. Good job though!!

So you're saying you bracket race with a flashlight?

George might think that he has it figured out (as related to the flashlight bulb but he would be wrong). The "Tell" has nothing to do with the flashlight bulb and when Kelly sees the bulb and the car leaves. Kelly leaves when he sees the "tell" and the car reacts and leaves slightly after the bulb comes on. He has come very close in a couple of shows to leaving early (like all bracket racers do occasionally) but so far he has not.
It also has to do with the electronics package he has on the car George.

Very good racer, actually.

George is just saying that he just hasn't figured out the "Tell" yet.

The thing is with the street type starts, there is no electronics to see the .0001 lights.

If all they have is camera playback, anyone with a brain should argue his 'leave'.

If they see on the camera his car starting to 'move' before the light comes on, they would flag him.
(the car body is moving but have the wheels moved yet)

Well you are getting closer, John, than Mr Flashlight Bulb.

The electronics package is not set up on the flashlight so your .0001 light analogy means nothing.

What I was getting at is on the strip you can cut a .00001 light and be green.

With a flashlight, the deciding factor is the camera, who's to say if a car left at .00001 second?
No one.

It would be up to the people looking at the film.
If they see any kind of movement in the car before the light is on, (and a flashlight is slower than a LED light), they will say he left early.
This would mean he could have a bad light on the christmas tree but with the flashlight, he would be fouled out.

An example:

My I have many videos of my Firebird leaving.
You can see on slow motion the front rising up at the 2nd light, which is .500 second before the bottom light, which is .500 second from green.
(that's 1 second!)

This is with the tires still in the beams. Then add the reaction time into that.

So I doubt if they will let someone 'look' like he is leaving a second or more before the flashlight comes on.

There is an audible bang on the show coincides with the light coming on on the slow mo replays. I just laugh every time I hear the bang on the sound track. Never have seen a flashlight with a speaker for the bang you hear on the show.

The guy in NOLA that uses a light sabre for a flashlight has a good idea because several guys said they didn't see the light from the left lane due to all their scoop, tunnel rams etc. blocking their vision from the left lane. Last season they complained Chief was holding the light too low, his reply was I believe, he was 6'3" and that ought to be high enough for anyone to see.

Even though I enjoy circle track racing, I do watch SO every Monday, mostly because his car runs at the top of the list all the time. Justin's a pretty sharp dude when it comes to getting his Pontiac competitive with all the competition.

Brad, Explain to me how a 'Roundy-Round Guy' can pick up on the concept in one post and the Drag Race Guy "with 50 years of experience" can barely read the words much less understand the concept being theorized, Therefore he resorts to the 'canned reply', "it is stupid".

I look forward to seeing the Crow-Mod making some passes on the show next year.
At least it will be closer to Kelly's weight when it runs against him.

I apologize for calling you STUPID (actually I said your "STUPIDITY is showing") your not STUPID........no COMMON SENSE maybe........IGNORANT maybe but not STUPID! In my 45 years of Bracket Racing (not sitting in my recliner watching TV) and SOME heads up, I have probably "either or both" SEEN it all or DID it all......there is nothing about Drag Racing YOU could EVER (did I say ever) teach me, stick to being a Company paid engineer because you are no Drag Racer BUT then again I'm not an Company paid engineer! LOL!!

Dam* George, it is a good thing that you have a big motor home so that your ears do not touch the walls when you go inside and get bruised up.

Tom V.

45 years of bracket racing and your replys just proves that you don't know everything about Drag Racing and how Kelly always leaves ahead of the other guy. The noise you hear Brad is not the Tell.

It would be easy for a starter with a flashlight to mitigate such an obvious tell - just wait 1 second before turning the light on. It isn't plausible that every aspect of this show isn't discussed in great detail by the participants, especially something as important as a fair start. I guess Tom V must conclude that every racer on the show except Kelly is as dumb as a rock.

Cosgrove I had given up that I would learn anything on this post but I was not aware of your car at all. That's a bad mofo. Tom and George can progress from here
