I am building a 535ci street motor and would like your input on a cam. Current cam that I am thinking on re-using is 238-242 @ .050 .570 lift solid roller. It is now in the 455 that I just pulled from the car. I want a fairly smooth idle because the car has a/c and power accessories. It also has a D1-SC Procharger and all was good till a piece of snap ring off a broken roller rocker made its way to the oil pump and seized it and now you know why I pulled the motor. I am also upgrading the stock iron heads to 350cfm edelbrock RPM heads. It has T-400 trans, stock converter and 3.08 rear gear. It was making 600 rwhp and now I am looking for around 7-740ish HP. Thanks.

I'm thinking 10 degrees bigger each side and at 535 ci should still be pretty docile. (present seems suited to a 400)
Lobe sep at 112 maybe 111 either installed 4 deg advanced(108 or 107 respectively) Seat timing near 280/284. A bit more lift with 1.65 rocker. (.400 lobe with typical 1.65 puts you at @ .660 net lift after lash.) |

I'm thinking even bigger than another 10 degrees, more like 20 degrees, considering the displacement. Use like a 114 lsa for vacuum, to support the accessories, and the blower will like it better too.
I ran roughly a Crower 247/254 @ .050, 114 solid on the street with power brakes and A/C, and it idled great, no issues with accessories. That was a 461ci. And that's roughly BruceWilkie's recommendation. Add 70 more cubes and you can add another 10. You need something that is going to take advantage of the heads too, a small cam won't net you the desired hp goals. At 350cfm, the cam you have now is useless. I may be off here, sure others will chime in, but I'm thinking like mid-250s/mid-260s, on a 114-116. Maybe a variation of the Crower 60452 solid roller is what I'm thinking. (257/263 @ .050), and have that cut on a 114-116. That will calm it down further, and provide plenty for the accessories. I would think 114 would be fine for the displacement you have. .

250's may be too much for what I want. No rough idle for this build. I already have a 537ci in my 69 firebird with a mid 260's duration cam in it.
The wife should be able to go shopping in this thing, with the a/c blowing cold and no ill street manners (car shaking at a stop light). I think I'm leaning to mid 240's. Hwystr what cam is currently in your car? Also, you ever go to the Burger King on Saturday nights? Steve |

If you have a blower on it, I think you could make those numbers with that cam no problem...JMO

Yeah, used to go all the time to BK, car's in the body shop at the moment, in the process of a rebuild, cloning a 70 judge. (check my build thread) Probably have seen the 442 up there.
Seriously, I drove that car in DC traffic, all up and down the east coast, my daughter drove it many times, as did my son, they're in their' early to mid 20s, no problem. Idle in 100 degree weather with the air blowing for over an hour, got caught in the sniper crap on rt 95 coming back from Kings Dominion, the works. Wider LSA calms it down, bet the cam in your 69 is on a 110, yes? Hyd roller or solid? If you run hyd roller, subtract 10 degrees from a solid. (General rule of thumb) After I did that cam, I kinda beat myself up for not going bigger. 10 on top of the one I had even with the 461 (less cubes) still would have been decent, easy to drive. Would have added a little more chop to the idle, maybe another 2 or so inches less on vacuum, but still manageable. I had like 13-14 inches on that cam, and with a dual 9" booster, brakes were great. I think 70 more cubes with 10 more degrees would act just like the setup I had. I sold that cam to a guy on here, he's running it, ask him how he likes it. (think it was JLMounce if I remember correctly, think he's force induction too) If you want to be conservative, go with the same grind, that thing was one of the best combos I've ever run. You can search here, I posted the cam card several times. On my current build, I was further calming it down, originally was going to build that car for my son, but going to keep it now, bought him something else. (daughter got the 442). But once I get it back I'm going to change to a VooDoo solid, based off a BBC grind, probably the 249/255 on a 110. Dropping back to a 110 is like adding 10 degrees in some ways, idle for one. It's either that, or I go hyd roller, the 243/251 Pontiac grind, haven't made up my mind yet. .
