It is a fantastic feat just given the tire handicap alone. I have also enjoyed watching your fantastic Pontiac over the years. In the early years running NMCA. I was struggling with my 421 2+2 and you made it look easy.

Serious Pontiac bashers out in Flint where I used to street race. That car would be a riot.

A Ram Air II Firebird was one of the fastest STREET cars in our part of the country, Chebby 396-375 killer. Unfortunately Mr Stevens, may he rest in peace, made a mistake getting away from a civilian vehicle coming his way in the lane he was in. The left lane.
Two lane blacktop road and the car was destroyed and Mr Stevens killed.
The civilian vehicle and the other race vehicle were unharmed.

Street Racing is not always a happy experience for some. Mr Stevens was a good guy. RIP

Tom V.

I hear you Tom. The track is unquestionably safer. The safety crew alone says it all.

Congrats on a fantastic run!!

The point Dragncar was trying to make is the fact that the RAII intake port is not a raised port like on the RAIV head. It's essentially the same standard-size intake port you'll find on the common high-compression big-valve D-port 400 heads, such as the 1968 #16 head.

Most all of us are aware they're a round-port exhaust head, but again quite unique and unlike every other round-port head because of the standard-size intake port.

Huge congrats to Rick and Scott, simply an amazing accomplishment!
I believe it is in the intake manifold.

As I seem to recall, there was an intake manifold flow comparison done several years ago in HPP;
If I recall correctly the reduced depth in the plenum directly under the carburetor for the aluminum intake manifolds actually hurt performance on the top end - so that infact the standard cast intake manifold flowed better than the RAIV/455HO parts.
BUT!
When a carb spacer was placed between the intake and carburetor of the RAIV/455HO setup, the increased depth resulted in performance gains...

So to me, it's all in the intake, and how the two piece RAIV intake actually has the bottom of the plenum too close to the bottom of the carburetor.

The fact that Mr Mino (of RAII notoriety) has spoken up congratulating you two on a fantastic accomplishment seems to be the icing on the cake!

Only the 72 HO intake has the raised floor - the others are the same.

No, I think there might be a hemi or 2 and maybe one 427 corvette that is a little quicker but this 68 Bird is very impressive.

that has not been my understanding;
As I have understood it, all 69-72 2-piece intake manifolds are essentially the same piece with only the part number changed, and small revisions for lets say intake cross over vs cylinder head mounted temp senders, with only the seperate exhaust cross over changing in 1972 for the 2nd design external choke coil;
so the raised floor was necessary for the cast iron exhaust cross over that passed underneath it - iirc the cast iron intake has roughly a 1/4" thick section of metal separating the plenum floor and the exhaust cross over.

No, Dave Dudeck's Hemi Road Runner ran a 9.90 @140 MPH at the same event. That was Dave's best run ever.

The record of 9.84 was set many years ago by Lane Carey in his 429 SCJ 1971 Mach 1 Mustang. If I remember correctly that 429 was 571 inches or so.

When I was running Top Stock in the old NMCA my RAIV 400 was in the same class as those 429SCJ with giant ports, high compression, good intake, Holley. That is a pretty good combo in the Torino/Falcon platform. But we did in the Stock and Top Stock have some competitive Pontiacs even back then. These guys in FAST have taken that to a new level. But class winners did get P&G for CI then.

That is also my understanding but I have only owned 3 of the things and am not an expert on the different changes. I do know a Holley HSD will whip a 69 version by 3%.

I had a 70 mach 1 for a few with the 351 Cleveland. I don't know if the 429scj had bigger ports but the 70 351c was pretty damned impressive.

Yes, Boss is right. I have measured the plenum depths on original RAIV and '71 HO intakes and they are cast at the same depth as the cast iron intakes. The '72 HO and service replacement HO intakes ('71 & '72) have the shallower floor by .125" or so. I haven't measured a service replacement RAIV intake yet as I don't have one of them.
