Default pulley misalignment

1969 Ram Air III 4 speed. Manual steering, supposedly purchased all numbers correct balancer and water pump and pulleys - so I thought - but way mis-aligned.

Anybody know what's up? TIA

There are two different water pumps for 69, (3 31/32 and 4 15/32) it would appear you need the longer one to make it work. I'm sure there's info in the cooling or tech section if you search.

yup, get the longer late 69 to 79 water pump or get a 67 to early 69 shallow pulley. Remember that AC and non AC cars had different diameter pulleys.

I believe all judges should have the long pump since i think the switchover to the long pump was before Judge production began but I'm not sure.

I'll check the pulley codes when I get home tonight.

My car is early ram air , non-Judge, '351' is correct. Realizing I have the wrong pulleys - I need the shallow 9796059 pulley, yes?

I didn't realize they ran a single belt. First thought was its missing a pulley grove.
I am used to seeing a separate grove for the PS & alternator.

'69 Pontiac V8's, all originally used the "351" casting short 11bolt water pump. The confusion with the late '69 terminology stems from Pontiac continuing the production of '69 Firebird into November of '69.

The very earliest '70 Pontiac V8's were the first to use the "124" casting tall 11 bolt waterpump, while the long run of '69 Firebird V8's continued to use the short "351" casting pumps. This has been confirmed on a multitude of original '69 Pontiacs. In the early '90's when I first began pulling "351" casting pumps to rebuild, I always cked boneyard '69 Birds. Odds were a lot better on the '69 Birds than on '69 A-B-GP's, same looking for early '69 wterpump pulleys.

Service Parts...Pontiac, for some reason, did not want to stock in parts, the "351" casting pumps, so service bulletins were issued, as well as notation in the master parts books, that in service a later tall 11 bolt waterpump would be used on '69's, there also is a notation that the dealer mechanic would have to swap on a corresponding "late 69" (actually '70 model waterpump pulley). This worked fine for service, except on '69 Firebirds. One should view an original '69 Firebird performance V8 with 4 core & factory 5 blade flex fan, & look at the very short fan spacer & then will see the problem.

From a specialty core perspectus, one will not find original "124" casting waterpumps cast in the Winter or Spring of '69, the first "124"s were cast in the Summer of '69 & used on early '70 models. The "059" single groove pulley is correct for Des' application, along with "847" crank pulley.

You learn something everyday! I guess it was by coincidence that all my early production 69's had the short pump and my February and later cars had the longer pump. I think my 69 convertible was built with the long pump but the car was built in mid July 69 so that may make sense. It even has a 70 style intake but with a late May 69 casting date.

I thought my shop manual would have the pulley listings but I guess I was thinking of the MPC. I'll look at it tomorrow and post all the different pn's and letter codes unless someone beats me to it.

Scott, the 9790946 man strg wp pulley is '68 only. Same with the '68 manual strg alt bracket, one year only. Both legs of the '68 manual strg alt bracket are on the same plane, where they attach to the waterpump. Have sold several '68 sets & have a complete '68 set off a GTO that was converted to PS @ dealership in '68.

when '69 models arrived, they had 11 bolt timing covers & the "stagger height" of their "351" casting pump required the the use of a new waterpump series, the "059"-"062"s. Due to different design of the timing cover & waterpump, the lower leg of the '69+ manual strg alt bracket steps back (towards the block 1"), otherwise the manual strg alt bracket looks like its predecessor, the '68 only bracket.

when '70 A-B-GP's were introduced, the mtg flange of the new "124" casting water pump stuck out further & required another series of waterpump pulleys, the "127-130"s.

next Pontiac came out with the '70 V8 Firebirds & the steel PS/Alt bracket setup was unique & required its own series of pulleys, not only the WP pulley, but the PS pulley & the crank pulley.
