Noteworthy that a ported factory intake will support a 600hp, big bore stroker. Did you have a spacer in there to increase plenum volume?

What is this going to do? Will it lower your oil pressure? Could the groove be made in the lifter body rather then the block?

No, just a gasket, and Q-jet. It also had an HEI distributor.

It won't change the oil pressure at all. The hole is already there. I just lowered it some so it reaches the oil band of the lifter when the lifter is on the base circle. It does not go down far enough for the lifter to expose it at full lift. This engine had 74 lbs. oil pressure when hot. The reason some hydraulic roller lifters are noisy, is because the oil band is too low, and it is not exposed to the oil hole during it's time on the base circle. This is the critical time the lifter needs to refill before it gets hit again by the lobe. After a short time the lifter is empty, and makes a lot of noise. The volume of oil that can squeeze around the lifter and make it's way to the oil band of the lifter, is not enough to refill the lifter if there is not excessive lifter bore to lifter clearance.

Did it support it, or hold it back? I'm thinking what it made probably isn't the best it would do, since you were restrained with using certain parts.

I'm sure with a single plane intake, and a Holley, it would have easily exceeded 600 HP.

Yeah Paul, I have faith in what you and Jeff turn out of that shop. Although 589 HP and that flat torque curve makes a nice street engine, I would bet you guys could easily surpass that with 505 ci, if you weren't restrained with camshaft and intake. I know that's what certain people want, and that kind of "ties your hands" But I'd bet with your experience, even 650hp would be relatively easy and still very streetable.

I do like the stock style intake and stealth it provides though, but if I were going that route and it were mine, I'd take it one step further and run factory iron heads on it for giggles, or somehow disguise the aluminum pieces.

Carb is a little small for it as it had 1.5" of vacuum at full throttle. Had 15" of vacuum at 1100 RPM.

Ooops, I should have said "carb" along with intake and cam. I do kind of like the idea behind this engine though. I'd enjoy a mountain motor that looks completely stock on the outside, RA manifolds and all. Even if it did limit the power potential it would be a ball on the street.

GTOfreak

Should this be done for solid lifters with a lower band as well? Just to keep the lifter band loaded with oil. I'm thinking this will help the lifter wheel live longer.

Well, it certainly couldn't hurt, but when you think about the fact that at only 1000 RPM's, the lifter is rising, and lowering 8 1/3 times per second, so it's usually not an issue with solid lifters, but a hydraulic mechanism is another story.

Paul,
Did Cliff do the carb?
Wish you could have tried other induction options...

The carb was done by owner, with help from Cliffs book, IIRC.

Was it a one of the larger Q-Jet bodies or the 750 CFM version? Great job on a really cool engine build. Sometimes less is more.

It was an 800 CFM version, according to the owner.

Re-calculated the compression, and it is 10.76:1. The piston has a 14.7 CC dish.
