my bet is a previous owner had rust repair done on the windshield sealing area, & the bodyshop that did the repair used a cutoff cowl panel off of a '70 Malibu. This panel only extends about two inches inside the passenger compartment on a Malibu-Chevelle-Elco-Monte, it does not extend up to the same plane as on a '69-72 Pontiac A-body. After the rust repair was made, the original Arlington cowl tag never made it back on this '70 GTO body.

The whole scenario of a GTO VIN tag swap onto what amounts to a '70 Malibu convert body, well, that's just doesn't make sense, unless one was extremely desperate. The Malibu body incorporated the use of totally different rear 1/4 panels, different outer wheelhouses, different trunk drops, different rear tail panel area going down into the trunk. Also different doors, different back window, different rear 1/4 windows. It would take extensive work to change all of those pieces of sheet metal over to '70 Pontiac A body 2 door pieces.

The body is still sitting on the frame so these are the only numbers he could get off of it....6263667 and below that was 32-721?

Sounds like a frame part number and manufacturer date code, perhaps.

Did he get those off the side of the frame rail (the vertical section)? The VIN stamp is up on the top of the horizontal flange of the frame rail. You would only be able to see it with a mirror (if you are lucky).

6263667 is a Parish frame. Don't get the 32-721 (although 7 21 is possibly the frame assy. date). R113xxx is around a late Sept build.

Yes those are from the side of the driver rail behind the rear wheel.

VIN number on a 70 GTO, from the Baltimore plant anyway, can be found on the front firewall on the passenger side on the sloping part of the body under the fan opening. Body will need to be very clean as it is just stamped in.

If you do find the VIN no. and was build in Canada, you can order the documentation from GM Canada. Gm Canada kept all their records and is more detailed then the one PHS supplies. Also if it was built in Canada PHS will have no info.
