I turned 64 on inauguration day, was born the day "Ike" Eisenhower took office for his first term.

I might have one or two more major projects in me, God willing................

The bad thing about wrenching on cars for a profession as opposed to doing it as a hobby, is it beats the living daylights out of your body. My Dad was a mechanic all his life and I saw the toll it took on him, you'd think I would have done something else.

My father did try to dissuade me from picking mechanics as a trade, but what did he know? I was obviously younger and smarter than he was...................

So between the injuries sustained through my chosen profession, arthritis, and type two diabetes, it beats the body down, and makes mechanical projects that much more challenging.

Turned 65 last December and still rehabing a knee that got infected after a spider bite last June. Sure takes longer to heal from this sort of thing when one is older! Still able to get under the cars to work on various things, but those lifts that would fit in my garage are sure looking more attractive every day.

57 for me, right in the middle of the pack. Makes sense since these cars were old enough to be affordable right around the time the mid-late 50's crowd first got their drivers license.

I really enjoyed building Pontiacs over the years but starting a new project is off the table now. The mind may be willing but the body is just not what it once was.

41. Got my 65 GTO at age 15 from my parents, who bought it when I was 8. As much as I have always been obsessed with hunting and fishing, I have always been even more obsessed with old cars. I guess when I was three or four we'd drive around and I'd identify every car we drove by. Still need to get my hands on a nice 55-57 Chevy to say my life is complete.

3000% this. I still have my Firebird because I purchased it cheap many many years ago and was able to fix it up when parts and labor costs weren't astronomical. It still took me 16 years to do it though.

All of my friends that used to be in the car hobby, have long since sold off all their cars because life starts getting expensive when you have a family, have to pay off your education etc.

Ouch. I laid out $13k for daycare and preschool for 2 kids last year and I thought that was bad....until I talked to friends who are just getting hammered by it.

Anyhow to add to my previous statement...it used to be that these cars were considered "fast" in stock form. That was true up until about 5-7 years ago and all of the sudden for what you spend on buying and modding a 50 year old musclecar you can buy a killer Factory built hotrod (mustang, camaro, challenger, cts etc) for the same or less, they're faster, have the creature comforts, warranty etc. It's way easier, less maintenance etc. Anyhow I figure we have 20 good years of musclecar fever left.

Sorry, but to me, this upcoming birthday is a frightening one - I have just accepted being in my thirties, and now I'm turning fourty - what the crap happened!

A number of years back, Pink Floyd's 'Time' really hit me in a profound way, that it hadn't previously;

You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

The profoundinty (that's a word right?) was more about my social/dating life - I was keeping busy with work, and my car stuff thinking I was young and had pleanty of time to start dating... then WHAM(!) I had been in my rut for a good decade...

According to this site, I was twenty-seven when I joined;
I know I was lurking here for several years before signing up - I used ton pretty much only hang around 'Classical Pontiac', and the original incarnation of 'Trans Am Country'...
I believe I signed up on CP back around '99/00 when I was going to college, and for the first time had regular access to the internet...

The biggest difference between when I originally signed up here, and now is that I was still regularly driving my Formula back then - but for a good thirteen years, I have been saving up, making plans, and stockpiling the hard to find parts for my Formula - to resurrect it, and free it from the cancer (also known as rust from coming from a heavily salted region of Manitoba) that it has had the whole time I have owned it...

VERY good point.

As bad as I believe that some of the times you have witnessed would have been (cold war, "performance" cars from 75-88-ish, disco, fake bands, glam-rock, hair metal for just a few examples), I would think that it was better to live back then, than now...
Everyone is too busy, life is too fast paced;
Consumerism has run amok - and a part of this need to buy more, and have more conveniences, is the acceptance of lower quality foreign junk - which has taken jobs away from north americans.. .

I have been called a throw-back;
Which is to say a person born decades too late.
I wear that title as a badge of honor.

Even my second "toy" car was released before you turned 50...
As cool as it would have been to witness first hand some stellar bands, and serious Detroit iron, after a really sucky time in music and cars it seemed to have gotten better...

60's & early 70's you had Floyd, Zeppelin, The Doors to name a few, and some really great cars...
The only redeeming things from the 1980's seems to be cheesy sit-coms, and the development of home video game systems...
Then in the early 90's music got good again, and Detroit started mixing things up - the Quad4 seems to have been a huge deal when it was released, and i have surprised MANY V8 & blown V6's with this little naturally aspirated motor...
I would have also liked to have seen what people were doing with Quad4HO cars back when they were new - every now and then I get stories of them walking the likes of Iroc's ect back in the day...

I think I've said this before here but, most of the time I think I'm 30, sometimes I act like I'm 10 and on days when I end up working hard, like I did yesterday, my body lets me know that I am, in fact, 53 and have not taken care of myself as good as I should have.

My mother used to tell me I was old enough to know better from a very early age. Apparently she is still wrong.
