Im ordering the last of the parts i need to finish my motor and im to the point of measuring pushrods. Im running an sd performance "old faithful" cam, (236/245 dur @ .050" lift .578"/.582" with 112 lobe sep) and 1.65 roller rockers. I can mesure the lenght but my question is what diameter and wall thickness do i need with this set up?

What heads?Stock guide plates are 5/16 and RA IVs are I believe 11/32.Tom

Go with the thicker wall section. Mine are Manton 0.118". If you go up in wall thickness from say .083 to .118 it's about 5-6 percent 'stronger'. But the greater column strength comes from the diameter. Example if you were to build a 5/16 pushrod and a 3/8 pushrod at the same length and same wall diameter the difference in column strength is 96.7 percent different. Do you need 3/8 here, no just a tid bit for interest.

From Manton- "Do not be overly concerned about pushrod weight. The pushrod is on the slow moving side of the valve train. The additional weight of a heavy wall pushrod usually provides a much needed increase in valve train stability."

I would just add my strong endorsement for Manton Pushrods. Give them a call. Family operated, American company of the highest quality. All USA steel, fast service. In the 20 years we have been running their pushrods in the most extreme conditions, we have broken 2 of them. Neither failure attributed to the pushrod, but an unfortunate result of other engine damage. They do offer 11/32 diameter pushrods, which is rather uncommon. Probably plenty strong enough and you could use stock Ram Air IV guide plates if you wish. If you have the room, I would step-up from 5/16".

I agree, good stuff from good people. They've been making pushrods for years.
Last set I ordered was late on a Friday. I had them on Tuesday with no rush request. They said probably before Friday. Price was quite reasonable.

Get the biggest diameter you can get first. Then go with the biggest wall thickness.

Smith Brothers here too..I have been running a set of restricted pushrods..seems to work well.

All of these places are good, IMO. You will get a good part from any of them. One thing to check since you are in the .600" lift range is that the pushrod does not start to bind with the rocker arm just under the ball of the pushrod. If so, you will need the pushrods with the 220° ball on one end. That will give needed clearance so they don't bind at full lift.

Thats for the info guys. As for the heads there a worked over set of 4x heads and pushrod holes have been elongated. It looks like ill be giving smith bro. a call and see what they recommended.

If your running hyd roller lifters heavy wall 5/16 should be no issue.Tom
