And what years or if actual Pontiac engine?
The 1989 Turbo TA is probably a fast one. The later 2002 TA's also fast. The GXP's also very fast. But none of them the traditional Pontiac engine.

Of the real Pontiac engine models, I'd have to guess a '69 RAIV Bird, assuming it is the lightest car that came with a RAIV engine. One reason I think it might be faster than the '68 RAII, is because the 041 cam had 1.65 rockers in the RAIV engines. I've read that the Bird Q-jets were fixed, so that the butterflies would not open all the way. So, was this enuff to make a heavier A-body quicker or faster ?
One reason I think a RAIV might be quicker than a RAII is because Scott Burton's '70 RAIV Bird is the quickest Pontiac powered Stock class drag car. It is quicker than Leo Glasbrenner's '68 RAII. I realize these are not street cars. But I have to assume that it represents the potential of each engine. There were Pontiac engines with more rated horsepower. But those engines came only in heavier cars. I think the 421SD cars went well over 150mph in NASCAR trim, & won lots of races. And the 421SD cars also won lots of drag races. Some of these cars were not very streetable, but they made enuff of 'em to make 'em legal for racing. Definitely NOT "mass produced". There was a 428 rated at 390hp. But they came in heavier cars. The SD455 would have been a contender, but it had low compression & a cam that was too small. It's interesting tho, to think about combos that could possibly have been ordered, with either real tall or real short gears. For example: some 2nd gens had 2.41 gears. These would give a Bird a lot of top speed, if it had enuff engine. Don't know what the lowest numerical number gears were that could have been ordered, behind the stronger engines. And, is it possible that a car with a 3-speed manual & 2 series gears might have had the most top speed ? And, for 1/4 mile times, I know 4.33 gears were available in at least some of the RAIV vehicles. So, I assume that one of the 4-speed RAIV cars, with 4.33 gears might have been the quickest 1/4 mile Pontiac ? Last edited by ponyakr; 04-09-2017 at 10:02 PM. |

Are you talking zero to 60 or standing 1/4 mile? I'm guessing the 2009 G8 GXP with the 6.2L.

Standing 1/4 miles times from zeroto60.com
1993 Pontiac Firebird Firehawk 13.3 2002 Pontiac Firebird 13.3 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP 13.0 1965 Pontiac Tempest GTO Hardtop 13.0 2005 Pontiac GTO 12.8 Not Sure about the accuracy but kind of interesting. They have many other models listed but these are the fastest listed. http://www.zeroto60times.com/vehicle...-60-mph-times/

Out of the showroom a 1965 GTO would not run 13.0. Maybe with some special tuning. I had one back then and all the ones I raced against (mine included) would run mid 14's.

Yeah, i just did some Googling. Most of the lists I saw are obviously bogus. And some of the cars are probably super tuned, & some are not totally factory showroom stock.
Don't know how you could ever prove that any of the times were anywhere close to what a factory example would have run. The only thing I know for sure is that my '69 GTO RA3 ran mid 13's with sticky drag tires. This was after just over 60k street miles. The engine was bone stock, except for a replacement timing chain set. The car still had the original close ratio Muncie & 3.90 gears. So, that means that a 4-speed RAIV Goat, with 4.33 gears & sticky tires, should have run real low 13's & maybe even dipped into the 12's, with a real good tune. |

Yeah, I'm not even sure where they get their info or how they determine that it is true. Just put it out there for everyone to decide for themselves if it is factual.

0-60 is more useful on the street than top speed on a day to day basis

The 4th-gen WS6 (Z-rated tires) T/A was speed limited to 160 MPH by a fuel cutoff. The limiters are said to kick in somewhere between 158 to 163 MPH. It wouldn't be unrealistic to say on a good day a WS6 could hit 165.
Superior aerodynamics and close to 350 real HP on tap.

Fastest: 1969 OHC-6 Sprint Firebird: it could Tach at 7500 RPM and cruise at speeds beyond any of the V8s. Try a standing 10 or 20 miles, and see what lives.

Quickest:
1968 Ram Air II Firebird with TH400. Was the 4.33:1 rear really necessary to get there? |

a 67 230 OHC-6 Sprint FB yes to around 7000 rpm, I would like to see a stock 250 OHC-6 rev above 6000 rpm. They used weaker valve springs as a built in rev limiter on all the factory 250 engines.
