I've seen that happen a few times. Since I'm not a "numbers matching" guy, it doesn't offend me any - but why pay up for a numbers matching car when you're going to sand that original paint off to put a Lexus shade on it, and throw the "pristine" original interior and chassis away in favor of some custom stuff that will cost $30k to buy and install? That part never made sense to me.

I have a friend that has the exact opposite color '65 hardtop (white exterior/Red interior) with a 4 speed. His father bought it new and took very good care of it. It has had exhaust and tires replaced as well as his father resprayed the engine in the 70's or 80's and looks crusty again. The exterior and interior are perfect and the car drives very well. I did some maintenance work on it a few years ago and was really impressed how original everything is. I was told water hasn't touched it since 1977. IIRC it has about 60k miles on it.

Thing is he was thinking about selling it. He just doesn't have the time or real interest in it. The car is only driven once/twice a year. 2 years ago he bought some redline radials to make it more driveable. I'll bet it has maybe 100 or 200 miles since then.

His father passed away earlier this year and he has changed his mind a bit. He says he will just keep it forever. I would like him to take it to a GTO Nationals event or even the MCACN show just so people can see it.

The attached photo is of it sitting in front of my house in 2009, when it had bias ply redlines on it. The pic of it with my '66 was at the fuel station near my house same day. The engine shot was in some misc parking lot at some time.

Even though it's a granny optioned car (like so many survivors), this car is a really bad candidate for cutting up for a pro-touring car.

I'm not a 'numbers matching guy' either..not by a long shot but in my opinion, it's a very sad day when one of the very, very few actual survivors' originality is destroyed for a purpose that any solid roller could fulfill just as well. I just don't understand that...

Thanks for posting this. This car is just fantastic......I'm drooling over here. Something about a red interior in these cars gets me every time. Great stuff!!
