In this day and age, are we not beyond this? Can engine we not accept the engine as it is? Must we stigmatize, generalize? Does the feeling of the engine mean nothing to us? What are numbers but facts? Will they feed the world, bring peace, create love? Must the non-matching engines always live in the gutter, ignored and shunned by the world? I think it's time that matching numbers engines realize their privilege. Join the NDM ... (Number Don't Matter), we will be marching next ...uhh.. pick a work day.

Huh. Learn something new every day. I wonder how *that* happened?

So there is a partial VIN on the block but it doesn't match the VIN on the car and that's the way it came from the factory, and it was common on all of the 455 HO cars in '71?

Someone screwed up on the assembly line...

My 71 SJ was 100% numbers matching everything before being completely molested but back then People were hollering about what I was doing so I kept EVERYTHING! I've got the th400, heads, intakes, qjet, manifolds, ac compressor (frozen),alt was replaced but factory ps pump still in use. I used the block for my current motor. So one day I may be able to join you in the elite 'numbers matching club'

It’s all for nothing if you don’t have the right color chalk for the inspection marks - or know that the guy who checked the rear end at Kansas City in ‘65 was left handed.

My engine is a rescue! No papers, poor mongrel. There are at least 2 Pontiac rescue shelters nearby!

Yes, and you have to know what time your car was made cause if it was close to a bathroom break, the marks were more illegible.

Just want to say ... your engine is total sheeeeet because it doesn't have matching numbers. It will blow up the first time you start it, and burn down your house, and cause your daughter to marry a musician.

In the year specific sections below, a grease pencil mark or a dab of a specific color paint on a steering knuckle is all important.

Long Live the Engine in post one

My random-parts 400 self-identifies as a numbers-matching '67 428.
The displacement-reassigment surgery is next year.

Who are we to question that? The days of "judging" are coming to and end! Join NDM (Numbers Don't Matter) now!

I am encouraging my children to spend time with random parts engines .... as long as they come from a decent neighborhood.

Love that! As iconic as they are, they are still waiting to be inducted into the rock & roll hall of fame. That organization is so totally full of chit.

BTW, gender neutral headers are in the making for spent waste gasses.
