For the most part mine came out as English and non-specific European. Also had a small percentage of Basque (which has a very specific marker).

What? Like computers, space travel, and cell phones?
Is it a perfected science? Not yet. Is it a little bit of a novelty in some senses? Yes. Does my tiny percentage of Middle Eastern and Jewish heritage explain my occasional moments of internal conflict? No. For me, it answered 4 decades of questions and speculation on where I came from, and why I looked like I do. I found out more from spitting in a tube than I found out by spending hundreds of $$$ and many years trying to search closed adoption records. From my experience, I would counter with "absolutely NOT nonsense". But perhaps it's not for everyone.

My cousin's daughter that I saw @ a wedding last summer mentioned that she had had testing done & asked "Iberian peninsula, what is that all about??"
Don't you know, I asked? My Great Grandmother compiled an amazing family history in the late 60's and it has been quite a reference for hundreds of people, which is really pretty cool. Seems a wealthy Danish family in the late 1700's was vacationing in Spain and "adopted a cute little Spanish orphan girl" Things were certainly less formal back then, I envision a little girl being pretty freaked out, going to a new land as basically a 'souvenir". I doubt she spoke any Danish as well! This girl grew up and married their gardener, eventually immigrating to the US. Got a Tin type of her as an old woman. Any Mayflower descendants here?

All just fads, lol! Mine confirmed what I knew about half my lineage and brought new questions about the other half. As an adopted person also, this is all I really have to go on.

This is my 10th Great Grandmother Mary B. Dyer, wife of William Dyer. They arrived in Massachusetts in 1635, probably on the second trip to the New World. She was an avid follower of the Quaker religion and banned from the Colony. She was one of the 4 Boston martyrs who died trying to have the laws against the Quaker religion repealed. Tho she was to hang in 1659 she was given a reprieve, only to be caught again upon returning to Massachusetts. She was hung in 1660.
![]() My uncle Bill, William J. Dyer, who was a toggleier with the 385th BG during the early years of WWII; was named after Mary Dyer's husband William.

Elizabeth Jackson Howe was born circa 1635 near Rowley, Yorkshire, the daughter of William and Joane Jackson. Elizabeth married James Howe in April 1658; the couple had six children, and resided in Topsfield, Massachusetts.
Elizabeth Howe (née Jackson; c. 1635–July 19, 1692) was one of the accused in the Salem witch trials. She was found guilty and executed on July 19, 1692. And I am a direct decedent , YEAH!!!!!!

"Iberian" and 'North African' background shows up in many people of European ancestry because the Muslims raided and raped all over the Mediterranean and Spain for over 1,000 years.
They got as far as Tours, France in 732 when Charles 'The Hammer' Martell defeated them. Tours is in north west France. It took his grandson, Charlemagne, to completely eject them from France. They ruled Spain, Portugal from the 700s to late 1400s. "El Cid', the Charlton Heston movie is about that epic struggle. The sultan in the movie (1962?) says things Muslim leaders say today. |

Where do you go to find the DNA matches?
Not meant as an endorsement but you can find biological family with AncestryDNA. There are more than 6 million people in the AncestryDNA community, making it the largest database of personal genetic data. .

It is reported that currently there are over 10 million living descendants of the 51 Mayflower Pilgrims who had children. Importsmasher we are not alone, with John Howland there are at least 2 million of us !
You are correct John Howland was the fellow that fell overboard but was lucky and lived. I guess if he had drowned we wouldn't be here. http://www.scmp.com/news/world/artic...rica-2-million .

I recently heard a little tidbit of commentary on the current boom on DNA analysis services and there was a sort of caution that when you get your DNA sampled, the company then OWNS your DNA henceforth. Is that true and is it spelled out in any sales information, etc.?
I suppose that if they own it, any future benefits of using it for developing medical products/procedures, cosmetology, etc. would be to the company, and not to you. |

694.1, I was always by told by relatives I didn't need any DNA test to confirm I'm an ahole too. LOL
At least Grandma Mary and Grandpa William Dyer had kids or I wouldn't be here either. According to my aunts my last name should be Dyer, not what it is now. They told me that after my mother passed away in 2007. Mom kept it a secret of 57 years, and they were too scared to say anything upon receiving Holy Misreable Hell from her.
