Everything went good with one exception. I am having a heck of a time urinating. Very frequent trips to the John, a lot of pain and very little production. I am going to my urologist tomorrow morning. We think it may be from the anesthesia and my bladder might still be asleeep

Workers comp is taking care of everything. My first two case workers left a lot to be desired but this last one has been an angel. Anything I need she approves without delay.

Call your doctor NOW and tell him or her what's going on. You had spinal surgery, and could have nicked a nerve in that area. It's probably nothing, but on the other hand, you might need a catheter so you're not going screaming into the ER at 4 AM this morning.

Call NOW, repeat, NOW. If you can't get ahold of the surgeon, were I in your shoes, I'd hit the ER.

I would agree with Mr. Dillon, perhaps your system is just in a little shock from the surgery, and it’s trying to get back on track, however it’s not worth taking a chance waiting, before you get into bigger trouble with the urinary track, kidneys. and bladder. Call the Doc, or get to the ER anything with the bodily functions, can take a nose dive quickly. Please be well!

Thanks for the concern I do have some good news. I started flowing better this evening and no longer have the urgent need to go. I did consult with my surgeon and urologist and both said that there could be quite a few reasons for my condition. My bladder could have stretched from the fluids given to me during the surgery or the anesthesia could be the culprit and my bladder hasn't fully awakened.
As for the nerve being nicked, the whole time I was being operated on a specialist had me hooked up to a machine that warned the doctor if he got close to a nerve so, while I don't rule it out completely I hope I am safe in that respect. Last night I could aplly light pressure to my stomach below my navel and it made me dribble. That discomfort there and ensuing results are no longer present.
I do appreciate all the concern and again, I want to thank everyone for their prayers and well wishes. This is the best group of people on the planet and Y'all like Pontiacs too!

Best of luck to you..I have L4,L5,S1 fusion with instrumentation myself..as well as both SI joints fused and both a Dorsal Column Stimulator and a Peripheral Stim implant. The spinal fusion was the easiest of them all..was up on my feet the next day...the SI joints were a horror story pain wise...unfortunately none solved my problems, but I knew going in I only had a 20-30% chance of returning to a normal life..had no choice but to have it done. I was destined for the wheelchair if not.

Was toroidal part of your anesthesia? If so, it’s a paralytic drug so it may still be in your system. I know I’ve had problems urinating after all my back surgeries because of it. Additionally, it’s common practice to insert a catheter in surgery patients. They might have removed it or inserted it a little bit too rough which irritated your urethra causing the pain. Be there , done that!

Been there done-that. Had same post-op issue from too much pain medicine pumped in via an IV after awaking from back surgery. They sent me home after surgery and that night and I could not pee. Ended up in ER by morning where they inserted a catheter for two days. I would have traded the post-op pain for a catheter any day!

Well, I went to the urologist today and after a delay because they didn't know this was a WC case I finally got to see the PA. He said a combination of the anesthesia and hydrocodone was probably causing the problem. He gave me three choices. One was do nothing and start taking Flowmax because of my prior history, or put a catheter in and wear it for a week or drain my bladder there and start the flowmax. He said I may still have to have a catheter put in for a week if none of the other options worked. Knowing that, I chose to have my bladder drained and start the Flowmax daily pills.
So a pretty little nurse escorts me to the procedure room where I figure the PA will do the job. I was a little taken aback when she said she would be doing it! Well, things went pretty good and she explained the procedure as she went along. Starting with a numbing gel with Lidocaine. Then she inserted the catheter and told me I would feel it as it went through my prostate which I did. The whole thing was over in less than five minutes and I was home 30 minutes later.
That is when my mouth started feeling funny. My lips swelled and my throat got very sore. I knew right away I was having an allergic reaction so I called the clinic back and was advised to go straight to the ER if I was having trouble breathing. I told them I could breathe fine so they put me in touch with the PA who told me to take 2 Benadryl and be sure to go to the ER if my condition got any worse.
The Benadryl did the trick. This is the third time I have had an allergic reaction to medication since I have been being treated for my injuries.
Everything seems to be working now and I am keeping my fingers crossed that nothing else goes wrong.
