Default center console light & glove box light assy

Are these two lights the same part? My console never had a light, but has the provisions. I am not seeing a separate part for the center console light.

Thanks!

yes they are. but you have to add a ground wire to that tab off the side and ground it to the screw below going into the floor pan. Just make sure you have a 68 console insert with the matching hole too or nothing will bleed through. AND make sure it's really going off when the lid's closed, they can be touchy. If it's not going off consistently, put an o- ring around the fingers at the base so it doesn't push in so far. The lid contact isn't very tight and if the spring is missing it can pop up.

If I'm not mistaken only automatic consoles had a light, probably because they could easily connect to the shift indicator light as a power source.

North,

nope, I've got a 68 4 speed console with it. I don't think they'd use the shift light anyways since you'd have to have the lights on for it to work. It had a long orange power wire running up to the accessory junction block.

I think you are right about 68, in 69+ they discontinued it. The 69 shop manual shows it but the drawing is of a 68 dashboard.

yeah, it was 68 thing only. I've had quite a few 68-72 consoles over the years when I'd buy every one I saw at the swap meets for $10. (those days are gone!) I'm guessing they deleted it due to problems with it staying on and that the light it throws is so crappy there's no real point since it doesn't help see what's below the hole anyways. There's a TSB in one of the years about the problem in the glovebox light being remedied with the o-ring. The switch on my console barely disengages when the lids closed so the same trick fixes it there too.

Funny, I always assumed it was on the manual consoles since my automatic ‘68 doesn’t have a console light. Maybe they dropped it mid-year?
