Default Anyone familiar with this cam...Crane H-302-2

Got my hands on a Crane cam and it has H-302-2 stamped on the back of it. I can't find any specs for that model number in a Pontiac grind. I see it for Chevy and Mopar, but not Pontiac. I assume it's the same specs but would love to know what lsa it's ground on. Going to stick this in a cheap 400 build I'm doing just because it's what I have. Just would like to know what I'm sticking in there. I did measure the lobe lift and calculated with 1.5 rockers it would be .504/.520 valve lift.

You should have a degree wheel at your disposal for times like this, no less for checking the installed point of any Cam!

I do. I just haven't gotten that far yet. I just found it weird that I couldn't find any info online and thought maybe someone would have experience with this cam. If not, it's ok. I'll probably get around to checking it next week. I'm just impatient.

I've handled 1 or 2 Pontiac cams in my time. Yeah, it fits a Pontiac.

I thought the cam looked familiar, we have it on the shelf, cam out of a 428 with a manual transmission

How did it run for you? It's a nice "off the shelf" street cam for a 455 with a 6-71.

Lsa isn't as important as where you time the cam. Advance the cam and exhaust opens and closes earlier and leaves less residual charge at end of overlap. Less charge pressure in chamber at start of overlap means charge will begin moving in sooner , as soon as intake charge has greater pressure than pressure in the chamber. Nothing's is going into chamber until chamber pressure is less than intake charge pressure.

Remember that LSA is nothing more than the coincidence of chosen points best used for checking purposes. Many "hot" LS cams have wide LSA and quite a few Pontiac cams had wide LSA... It's the installed timing points that matter.

Have a gut feeling it's going to be happy at 108 ICL NA

Have to somewhat disagree about lsa not important. I've seen first hand a gain of a tenth in the quarter by changing lsa. Maybe I'll get into it more later, but gotta go to work now.

So what's the overlap on that grind?

I calculate about 37 degrees overlap.

That's a prehistoric cam from the late 60s. My 1967 Crane catalog lists an H-302. 232/232 duration @ .050, .453 lift I/E with 1.5 and .489 lift I/E with 1.65..Intake open-close 39BTDC-83ABDC, Exhaust open-close 83BBDC-39ATDC. Part No. 28012 Use HydraLift Road H.P. Drags..I used and still do an H302-2. In 1970 or so in a 455 with 3.90s it was a screamer. Needed more converter so it came on late. Today in a 64 Conv 455 tri power and 3.23s its a dog. Somewhere in 1 of the Pontiac performance books there is a comparision between it a 744 and some other cams, sorry I don't remember which one.

The cam Paul K is referring to is a 308H-2.

The 302H-2 is 302 [email protected], 312 242 @.050 112 lsa. Same specs as the mopar you found. If it was a 302H I think then it would be the same on the intake and exhaust. It should also have a date code stamp on the back and a core letter, you should be able to tell when it was ground. You can go look at the specs on their lobe profile catalog as well. The intake profile is listed and the exhuast is listed 10 degrees below it. It if was a more specific grind than the stud hydrualics there would be another grind profile number after the 302.

The specs I listed came out of the Pontiac section in a 1985 Crane Cams catalog. It was the only 302-H I found for a Pontiac. I've also actually used that cam several times.

Straycat found something close but doesn't have the correct specs. The -2 on a Crane cam means dual pattern.

Over the years Crane would update lobes and change the specs slightly and sometimes keep the grind number and part number the same.

Sorry Paul, I see those specs for the 302h-2 you found don’t match the 308h-2 they offer right now. Only the .050 are the same everything else is different. I remember seeing that they had date codes stamped on the back end of the cam but I don’t recall how specific it is. Not even sure if they all have it. Sounds like measure time.
