SRR, you nailed it, it was extreme and thus the lol. I did however interview a 30-something yo man almost 3 years ago who had zero experience in my industry. As much as any business, our business is built on relationships but industry knowledge must be present if you're to bring value to the table. The interviewee firmly insisted that he could look up answers on the internet if he didn't know what the customer was asking for. Okay... quick example... a customer is going to ask for a single pole switch. Common light switch you find next to almost every door on the planet. But... does the customer want resi grade? commercial grade? spec grade? Back wired? back and side wired? color? We have 15000+ products on the shelf.. he didn't really know 50 of them. What was he going to do when he got a 50-60 line shop stock order and didn't know any of them? He wouldn't have been able to read his own notes because he wouldn't know what to write down to describe what the customer wanted. God help him if he got an RFQ for a lighting job or distribution panels. He was offended that I didn't believe he was a good fit. lol again.

This is relevant. Pokes a little fun at both sides. The “you’ll never communicate with your son if you don’t learn to text” line cracked me up.

when homo sapiens evolution comes to having developed long prehensile thumbs that are most adapt at smart phone poking, rather than grasping objects, it will officially be all over for the human race

There are lazy and entitled people in every generation. It does appear the older generations are more experienced in masking it though.

Exactly, the cell phone was the beginning of the decline of human society, it's only gonna get worse. Every idiot on the planet now has a voice. |

Before the cell phone became the downfall of society, it was Rock 'n Roll or something else.
Again: you've turned into your parents. |

Rock and roll didn't turn the entire population into zombies like cell phones did.

Man, if that doesn't hit the nail on the head. Almost ran a 45 year old guy over this morning who stepped into the street texting while I was DRIVING. At the airport, I'm the only human with a book. All the others are electronically disconnected. I don't own a smart phone, and don't think I ever will. Only have a flip phone for making....calls. I don't text. I may be a fossil at 57, but all of my time is my own and I don't miss many sunsets or other 'real' events!! VERY glad I grew up in the '60s--70's....and very glad I was taught by conservative teachers that had lived through the depression and served in WW2 who instilled character and integrity and can-do- attitudes in us kids.

My main thing is that the employers not cave to the current generation, and instead make them conform to the expected employee standards, as far as starting times, showing up for their shift, not calling off when they feel work is an interruption in their social plans/sleep patterns.
I frequent a local Burger King almost everyday and am friends with the female manager as well I'm friends with the two owners of the franchise. I would be beside myself if I had to depend on the current young people to run a business. Their turnover rate is immense. The one day wonders are almost entertaining to watch. When I spot a young person that is conscientious and has a work ethic I make sure to compliment them and tell them I admire how they handle their job and usually compliment their parents for raising someone that is conscientious in their job skills. I don't know if it has any lasting effects, but everyone likes to be told they're doing a good job in my experiences Thinking back to my earlier days when jobs were plentiful, I would switch jobs if I hated where I worked, I never, just didn't show up any more. During one year worked 5 different places because I was looking for more money, and when I found a better job, or simply hated the one I had, I changed jobs. I however at least informed the employer that I wouldn't be showing up for work, as I had moved on to something else. |

I agree that it’s rare to find someone young with that work ethic- but if an entire generation does it it will be difficult to force them to change. We try very hard to train our new sales guys to respect the job, but it isn’t easy.
This generation works to enjoy life rather than previous generations that live to work. When you look at it like that I can see their position but it will also limit their individual opportunities. For example if you work for 5 years and have multiple jobs that work around your hobby/passion (Uber, tackle, etc) you really haven’t educated yourself with a skill. 5 years later you are still applying for the same entry level job but you did get to enjoy your hobby/passion. Traditionally if you work 5 years in a field you may be training the entry level person at the end of those 5 years and looking for your next opportunity. But you probably did not have as much free time to explore your hobby. Both routes provide life experience- one with lateral moves and freedom; one with vertical moves and knowledge |

Considering we get canned in an instant because some shareholder wanted their stock to go up $10/share but it "only" went up $9.50/share for the quarter and therefore... it's a loss and employees gotta go. Companies have zero loyalty to their employees, especially the lower rung ones. I work at a job I enjoy and I have zero loyalty to a company after being canned to finance our COO's arrangement of a corporate buyout (to the tune of $1.2B) for him and his friends. Yeah, we're the ones with no work ethic...

With the economy the way it is right now, and shortage of quality labor you're probably going to see labor unions making a comeback. Corporations for so many years have had more applicants than they've had jobs, the shoe is now on the other foot. Qualified job candidates are going to have more clout and choice where they go for their profession. If I were in the market for a job I'd want a contract of sorts to assure I had some job security down the road.
