funny how the memo from Pontiac seems to be very eager to get people to order this credit option. Probably a reflection of the teething troubles with the endura bumper.

Remember, much of their promotion and advertising FOCUSED on the endura. So, after pumping people up, rather than pissing them off that it wouldn't hold paint, they offered a decent credit.

As I mentioned in another thread I had an ex employee who worked as a junior engineer at Inland where the Enduras were made. In the fall of 67 they had a nightmare situation with air bubbles under the paint on the enduras.
Apparently the assembly plant storage yards were full of built GTO’s with missing or rejected enduras. I’m sure this had a lot to do with the decision to offer the LeMans bumper as an option.

My friends father order a 68 GTO and Pontiac send him a letter telling him they were having issues with the front bumper and offered him the chrome front bumper but he waited(took awhile). He did not want the chrome bumper. His son owns the car now, it's a survivor and I believe he still have the letter.

Can you re-post them ? Picture in post #4 is a dead / broken link - maybe it was that one ?? You can post pictures straight to the forum as an attachment and nobody has to rely on p-bucket or 3rd party host. They become permanent historical documents when posted onto PY server versus 3rd party too. |

I had a '68 vert many many years ago (1977?) with a chrome bumper and hide-away headlights.
Didn't come from the factory that way though, it ended up that way after an accident with an uninsured motorist, and I had to pay out of pocket for the fix, and couldn't find the correct front bumper. Adapted the headlights to the chrome bumper. Wonder how many chrome bumper cars got that way by "accident"? |

Pretty car. The car that should have been my first Goat in 1977, it was $1200 and I only had $1000, was an enduro delete car. I thought the car had been hit and the chrome bumper was a replacement but the owner had the original paperwork and showed me. I was only 16 and didn't know they existed.

I did not recognize the car. I was wondering whatever happened to Aus Goat. He used to contact me quite a lot about '68 subject matters. Nice guy. Sent me a nice Tee shirt and cap with Aussie themes.

Mike Nixon said that I have a registry of 68 GTO's with the chrome front bumper, but sadly I don't. I said to Mike that I should start one since I know of 12 of these cars. I have owned mine for the last 42 years, but is not a special paint car, just Verdoro Green.

like we did for the Ram2 cars. But it won't pull up in Google/Yahoo/Bing searches when other prospects are searching for info across the internet - is the only drawback here |

Here are some of the documents from my car. Finally got them all resized for attachment. Original window sticker, build sheet, phs documents and the original color hiding under some body work from the crappy paint job. Can't wait till the day she's back to that color. Start work on her in a few weeks.

Joe, At the bottom of the build sheet is the color. Confirmed by the different areas on the car that were not painted like the trunk side of the back seat support and some chips of filler that flaked off. Apparently they painted the car over the original paint.

Without going back through the entire thread...did this car have a vinyl top? Wondering what the '1' next to the '-' is for on the paint section of the data plate. White vinyl?
