My parents saved a bunch of “zinc” pennies that were made for a time during WWII. Must’ve been around 1956 that I spent them .... on penny candy, of course.

I went through my small stash of old coins today.
I have many of the copper Wheat pennies and will find one every few years.

Most all of the 1943 pennies where steel and coated with zinc for the WWII effort.
We needed the copper for ammunition material.

Below are a couple zinc pennies and a couple “Old” one cent examples (1883, 1893).

My Father received some coins (copper, silver) from his dad and passed them to me 50+ years ago.

PS, I only had “one” Buffalo Nickel until this week. Now I have two.

Anyone have any old paper money? My wife brought home a 1928 five dollar bill a long time ago. She was cashier at a liquor store at the time. It's in excellent condition. Have no idea what it's worth.

We were cleaning out a basement at a bank throwing away all of the stuff that had been sitting for years. Completely random I found 2 1935 silver certificate dollar bills. Pop was born in 1935 so I had them matted and framed and gave them to him for his birthday.

surly it's a "silver certificate" ( 10.00 or greater could be "gold certificate rare" to 1933"..the series and minting location all could mean something.. just like coins..there are sites that explain this.. e.g. https://coins.thefuntimesguide.com/us-paper-money/

I have a silver certificate - it's nearly perfect.. except for a tiny piece of the corner... which is missing.

I really don't know. It doesn't say anything about silver. Just says "WILL PAY TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND FIVE DOLLARS" under Lincoln's portrait. It'll take me a while to go through the info on that link but just looking at it briefly, I did not see anything that looks like it. It's a standard sized $5 bill and the only thing that jumps out is that the seal and serial number are red. Also, the 'Legal Tender' wording is slightly different and in a different location than any newer bills I have on hand.

Check the serial no., if it begins with a red star, it's got some value.

As the story mentions, they weren't necessarily printed in 1928, the 1928F was still being printed in the '50s.

Lot of people have been saying that for years. We're no closer to it today than we were a decade or two ago. Sure, fewer people make their daily purchases with cash, but basically everyone still takes it, and there is no less cash on circulation now than there was a decade or two ago. It's not going away.

I use to think so too, as recently as 3 months ago, Then some of my tenants started e-transferring their rent to me and more are asking if they can. I still take cash of course, but I have to go to the bank and deposit it. I don’t mind carrying thousands of dollars cash to the bank, but I admit e-transfers saves me having to drive out to the property and catch up to everyone so they can pay. Many don’t have checking accounts anymore either so that is out for them.
It was my most recent trip to the bank that I posed the question to the teller about how soon it might be before places I go to and pay cash at, might stop taking it. She said Denmark is the first Country to switch, maybe it will be ten years or never for the USA or Canada, but I would have never guessed it would even be be possible. Now I think it’s highly likely in ten years and looking back ten years is no prediction of what the future holds.

Nice find on the Buffolo nickel. I used to go to the bank in the late 70s where an Aunt worked and would get a few dollars of rolled pennies and search through them. Back then wheats were still pretty plentiful. I got my son recently doing the same thing now for the last year. He averages usually 2 to 6 wheats per $5.00 worth of pennies. only found a few in the late teens ,twenties.and thirties. gets lots from 40s and 50s. most banks dont really want you to bring back the wrapped coins though so you almost have to spend them. Not had much luck in the rolls of nickels or dimes. or even halves if you can find halves in rolled form. Asking a close friend or relative that works as a retail cashier is a good way to find stuff. In the last month weve got a 43 mercury dime and a 62 roosevelt. that way.

This country isn't going cashless anytime soon. I work a register every day and there are lots of people who don't have ATM cards and checking accounts. Most still pay cash.
I snag most of the old coins I see.

As you may know, those were made from steel. Copper plated zinc pennies did not start until 1983.

i was at foxwoods casino in connecticut years ago when real coins came out instead of a receit and i hit a jackpot for 600.00 and when the money came out it had that silver coin jingle i ended up with 425.00 in silver dollars. till this day i have not checked the value on them
