I might be purchasing a 1968 Firebird next week from Florida. Im going down to look at it and if i buy it i will have it shipped back to New York. Does anyone know a reputable shipping company that not too much money. Prefer be open trailor so its cheaper. I would drive it back but it wouldn’t be registered and insured. Thank you for any help.

Shipping can be done and the info that Greg gave you is a solid lead.

However...

Your existing auto policy gives you automatic coverage for any newly acquired vehicle for 30 days. Your daily driver policy may not be the best policy for this however.

But if you have an existing classic car policy (Hagerty, JC Taylor, etc), they also include automatic coverage for newly acquired vehicles.

As to registration:

Temporary Vehicle Registration

If you are a non-resident from another state who has purchased a vehicle in Florida, you may qualify to get temporary vehicle registration tags from a local county tax collector's office in order to legally drive the vehicle back to your state of residence before registering it in your home state. You will need to pay Florida sales tax and provide proper proof of insurance in order to get the temporary tags.

Now I'm not sure how NY would treat the fact that you have already paid sales tax to Florida.

I know that when I moved from Virginia to Minnesota in 1978, I didn't have to pay sales tax again on the vehicle I had just purchased in VA to drive home.

Might be cheaper to rent a truck and tow dolly locally then drive down and pick it up. My son did that a couple years ago with a 1100 mile move. Rented a truck with unlimited mileage and dolly to move a 69 firebird from Ca to WA- about 1100 miles. It was cheaper to rent and return truck/dolly to the same location that to fly down and rent one-way, by about $700. You should be able to avoid Florida sales tax if you don't need any registration on it. Gas was cheaper then though.

I did it recently. Nearly all of the shipping companies aren’t actually shipping companies they are dispatch companies who work from the same database.

IF. Your dates are flexible you can do it pretty cheaply. If however you were like me and needed pickup and drop off within a pretty tight timeframe. The price goes up.

There is a website that is essentially an auction site. It’s easy to use, I initially accepted a cheap bid, like $650. But I quickly realized no drivers wanted to pickup for that on my schedule. I called another company who told me I needed to make the price more enticing for someone to want to meet my needs. I ended up paying like 1200 for California to Indiana and it was mostly painless.

I had a car shipped from Kentucky to NY about 2 months ago. My first two recommendations would be:

1. Do not request quotes at USHIP.
2. Do not use Roy at Door to Door Transport.

If you enter your info on USHIP you'll be bombarded by emails and texts for months. There is also no way to separate the wheat from the chaff so all in all it was useless

Roy at Door to Door Transport was nice enough but communication was terrible. He would say the car was being picked up the next day and he'd get me details only for me to call him 2 days later with him saying it would be picked up the next day. That happened at least twice.

It took over 2 weeks to get the car picked up. Then the he was waiting for spoke English as a second language and was difficult to contact while the delivery date kept getting pushed off.

A bad experience all around.

This is how we got our Camaro back to Wisconsin back in 2000 (about 1100 miles round trip) - except I was able to borrow my racing buddies PU and race hauler. That was much cheaper than renting, as my buddy didn't charge me anything (of course I'd helped him build his race car for years and pitted for him - so maybe he still owes me...).

Not knowing what the NY or FL sales tax is - can't say whether it would be better to pay FL tax on the temporary registration (assuming that NY wouldn't try and double dip) if the OP decided to drive the new vehicle home though.

Florida DMV could get you a Temp Tag and you can surely put insurance on the car. Florida MAY collect the tax FOR NY, or you would register the car in NY and tax would be paid then. A phone call to your local DMV could answer all your questions. Snow Birds buy cars here all the time and register them up north.
