Nice car! Paint looks great to me after 15 years. Your body work and prep must have been better than you give yourself credit for.

Mine is a 68, I thought by then they were using acrylic lacquer.

But I'm not talking materials, I mean quality of finish, so a half ass BC/CC compared to a half ass whatever the factory used in 68

Thanks, the car was purchased new by my grandparents and gifted to me in 98.

Thought about converting to a GTO many years ago but at the time money was short so I kept it a LeMans, glad I did.

This is/was the first and only time I "restored" a car so I guess I got lucky. I didn't know this site existed until I was well into the reassembley stage.

If you see it in person you can definitely see some of my goofs.

That looks good. I would totally be happy with that level of results. What brand and color paint is that?

If you go the macco route, 2 rules of thumb, don't drop. Anything on the paint, it will chip, and don't leave out in the sun for prolong time.. keep it garaged, and use a car cover so nothing accidentally hits the car.. it's an economy paint and collision shop, you will not get high quality materials.. and if you ask for 6 coats of clear, the painter will say sure, and laugh as he is shooting the car... the words you get what you pay for..

I have no idea brand other than what maaco provided as their premium paint.

What do expect for $1400, lol.

I drive it alot year round in the Florida sun and have not experienced any fading or peeling.

I will agree the paint is not very thick.

I fully expect to be painting in the future but as long it keeps holding up so will I.

Besides the car is for fun, not an investment, money pit maybe.

Camera shots can make a car look stunning ! ....Looked at some pics on line of a 66 gto ,a few years back.....Called the guy and made an appointment to see it...Wow !!.....I told the guy...my hats off to the photographer...lol

I had my Nova painted by Maaco. It was my daily driver and I just wanted it to look good. I removed all of the trim & badges, mirrors, door handles & lock cylinders, bumpers, and filler panels before taking it in to them and had them paint the filler panels separately from the car. I also debadged the car, leaving only the "Nova" emblems on the taillight panel and front fenders so had them weld up the remaining holes. It was very affordable and it came out looking nice, though not perfect of course. Good enough for a daily driver. That car sat outside year 'round and got driven in all weather.

At that time they offered a BC/CC option with paints made by BASF, so I chose that as it was their best paint. It was prone to chipping fairly easily, so the leading edge of the hood had lots of little pits in it after a few years but still, for what it cost I don't think I could've done better.

Not to go-back the thread..but what grit sand paper for wet sanding after painting with BC/CC paints? I just painted mine and want to cut and buff....2000 or 4000 grit?

It all depends how many coats of clear or how many coats of Single stage is on the car. You don’t want to sand through ...then your screwed. If you just painted your car ,how many coats ?

I finish with 1500. Anything finer feels like sanding with the Sunday Comics Section. I like to get things done not make it look like I am.

3 coats of color and 3 coats of clear. I was going to start wet sanding with 2000. But am guessing at what should be used.

With 3 coats of clear....(everybody’s coat is different ) but anyways......I see no problem starting with 1000 on a sanding block ...wet of course....just sand enough to get the peel out and the boogers....then follow with 2000 wet on a DA.......then finish with 3000 on a DA...Then buff.

When I let maaco paint my car it will be totally stripped down. No emblems or anything. I too am doing the base coat clear and I believe the guy when he says he will put extra clear on it. They had a late 70s K5 blazer in there that looked amazing for what it was. As I’ve said before I plan to drive mine everyday I can’t put 10,000 just in paint
