Cam Identification
pulled this cam out of a 455 of unknown history.
it's a '73 with 4X heads and looks like a stock rebuild at some point. .030 pistons and I assume this is a replacement cam as the flats on the lifters have a mirror finish. numbers on the end of the cam are 931880 and 576. Thanks, DaDuck |

Curious, why do you care what came out of it? You're not planning on reusing it are you?

not reusing it. Just trying to learn how the parts are identified. There are some numbers cast into the shaft also. I like to know how things work.
I am going to take the old Oil Pump apart to see how it works also. |

I see atleast one warn base circle on one Cam lobe in your photo so that Cam is toast.

I would have to guess it's an old 'builder' type cam that came in a 'kit', with generic markings/name. .

That's not a Crane Cam as the lobes are factory wide .
The narrowness of Crane lobes was something that I always tryed to avoid!

Hm. I don't remember the lobes being narrower than OE ones, but I was just going by the part number.
They were more narrow? Wouldn't happen to have a pic/example would you? .

No, the factory Cams seem to have wider lobes in many cases.

I recently noticed that the lobes of the Summit 2802 cam were narrower than the lobes of the larger Lunati cam it replaced.
Don't have a clue who supplies the cores to each cam company, nor which companies use the wider lobe cores. And, does each cam company use the same core for ALL the Pontiac HFT cams they sell ? |

The third one from left if that's it true base circle, it hard to tell from the photo.
It look to be that the shinny ware pattern is across near the whole lobe with when on the base circle it should only be half , like from one side to middle.

And now I have learned something about cam/lifter wear patterns. |

The base circle of the Cam is where the lobe is ground with a slight angle to get the lifter to spin as needed.
If the lobe is warn much more than about halfway across then the lifter is already not spinning at the rate it should to have a normal ware rate.

What the hell is "warn" and ware" ? Are you trying to spell "wear" and "worn"?

" The base circle of the Cam is where the lobe is ground with a slight angle to get the lifter to spin as needed...."
According to everything I've read, the entire lobe is angled, not just the base circle. https://www.hotrod.com/articles/chec...-lifter-bores/ https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...ce=sh%2Fx%2Fim |
