Like has been suggested a "few" times get a timing light with a tach it will open your eyes to what actually is happening as the engine revs up. Plus when you make adjustments you can document your changes.
Have timing light. Thanks.

It's tuned just fine. Runs perfect.

It's just not the cam I need for what I use the car for.

I could spend a lot of time tuning the wrong cam or I can install a different one that's more what I need.

You guys assume a lot. Wrong a lot. Probably just as much as I am, BUT I admit it. lol Thanks for your help.

You will spend time tuning ANY cam that would be suitable for the compression you have. Just reality.

Those E carbs are not correct out of the box for much!

Pastry Chef is correct, and you won't find much love for those E carbs. They work okay in near stock applications and that's about it. It's basically a copied AFB with parts that don't interchange.

For any kind of performance work you'll need to get into tuning the air bleeds, most likely idle feed restrictors as well as the main circuit, and the transition from idle to main is important from a drivability standpoints with larger camshafts, that's just part of the deal, and those E carbs are a pain in the butt when it comes to that. Much better off with a Q-jet or a Holley if you want to get intimate with the carb.

If I can make a 254 @ .050 cam in a little 302 drive like a dream, and my wife can drive the car daily, then certainly you can make a 227 @ .050 cam work in a much larger 400.

What RPM range does it surge at? You should be able to tell the difference between an engine that's loping below the cam's powerband and a carb that's causing a lean surge.

E AFBs are no where near as good as factory Crater AFBs!They can be made to work as well but it takes work. This has been beat on for years. They DO race well!Tom

If anyone is curious about Voodoo power band here is a 10:1 CR 400 with a larger hyd roller, same 110 LSA. Strong from 1600 RPM up.

I asked this before and do not believe it was ever answered. What is the cranking compression with the Lunati 703 cam.

While you have owned this car. Has the engine ever run correctly? Looking in at this from the outside I think it time to stop just changing parts and find the problem.

Here ya go. If there was ever an engine that was high strung and lacked a lot of torque, it's this one. With a 780 holley, a 254 @ .050 cam, all in a little 302, it's certainly a little high strung but with the right tuning applied it can be made to be an excellent driver. Knocks down 14 mpg city and 17 mpg highway, and that was before the 5 speed swap. I've spent quite a bit of time tuning it, throttle response is very crisp and quick. 11:1 compression with iron heads and runs on 91 octane.

Been daily driving this thing for almost 3 years now. As you can see, considering it's nature, it has no issue what so ever loafing around town and doesn't complain while doing it.

They work great on a lot of applications. I have one on my daily driver. My plow truck. My race car back in the 80's. They are easy to tune. They usually work great right out of the box. Anyone needs help tuning one I can give some tips, it's easy.
Now on my concourse car I use a Rochester and I had Cliff build that one for me.

EXACTLY! Smart man. I can tell the difference. If I would have said 'lope' instead of surge maybe you guys might have understood better. Sorry about the term thing. Surge came to mind.

A 302? Whaaaat? Who cares? Sounds like you have the wrong cam and tried to tune it to that. Cams are cheap and easy. They allow you to choose your power band. I picked the wrong cam so I'm going to use a different one.
Pretty simple thing. And with some lifter noise it's an easy choice for me and my car.

Yes Stan, it runs perfect right now. Plenty of power. I bet I can get some light under the front tires. It's a really fun ride. But I want the power range lower in the RPM's. This might be perfect for a lot of folks but not for us.
I didn't do a compression check. With 93 and no octane boost it's spark knocking quite a bit. Needs some octane boost as it always has. Not going to be a pump gas engine. It is what it is until I decide to take the heads off. I will work with the high compression until I get sick of buying octane booster.

Lower than 1600 RPM.. lol

If anything your compression is calling for a larger cam still.
You could drop down to a Voodoo 702, still going to have to tune that carb!

Dough dude, you don't listen. The carb is tuned.

If you can't find something positive to say then you are not much use here.

What's with the exclamation mark? Too much coffee? lol
