Default 1970 Lemans 4 door hardtop blue/blue no title

Nice! Thanks!

Blue/Blue. Body looks clean, though no close ups of the 1/4 panels.

Looks like an original 350b car.

No title. New Jersey.

How difficult would obtaining paperwork for such a car be?

What if GM had continued production of the 1970-72 GM A body somewhere in the southern hemisphere?

Default Lemans Update

Dan installed my new 'used' wood wheel (to replace the original wood wheel that was crumbling apart) while he was installing the new engine harness and ignition switch. Since the wheel had to come off, he made the switcheroo and also got the steering wheel locking mechanism to work again. It had been monkeyed with in the past and didn't engage with the key turned and removed, but now works when the shifter is put in reverse like the factory intended.

The 455 will go back in once we get the exhaust manifolds back from the blaster/coater guy (tomorrow hopefully).

The RA exhaust manifolds are ready to install. The coating will darken with heat cycling of the motor to a dark gray from the silver grey hi-temp coating. They were thought to be the 2.5" outlet versions, but lo and behold...they are the standard 2.30" outlets. The motor powered the 3700 lb. Tempest to 11.90 at 114+ mph, so they don't seem to hold it back too much.

The 462 is in the Lemans engine bay now with the new polyurethane motor mounts from Butler. They did improve the clearance between the bottom of the oil pan and crossmember and centerlink. Hopefully it is worth the extra cost.

M-20 is going in next!

We fired the 462 up yesterday to check for leaks in the revised exhaust system (the RARE mandrel RA headpipes & X-pipe from the 2-dr Tempest to the 4-dr Lemans...4" longer wheelbase). We kept the 14" case Ultra-flows (2.25" diameter already on the Lemans) and 2.25" tailpipes. Dan added additional pipe to transition from the 2.5" to 2.25" mufflers/tailpipes. The X-pipe is new to the Lemans, so it toned the rumble down a bit from the previous system.

Dan found a great working 7040264 O-jet from his stock on a close casting date '70 iron intake manifold. Next is to tweak the new combo a bit, install the hood and give it a test drive...hopefully next week.

The pics are prior to the Q-jet install...btw.

Here are pics of the finished engine transplant. This is a 462 (400 block with a 4.25' stroke) with forged rods & pistons (Eagle/Ross), SD Perf. 260/210 cfm cnc ported heads, RAIV HFT cam & lifters, 1.5 HS RR's , RA exhaust manifolds w/2.5" mandrel headpipes, 7040264 Q-jet on stock factory iron intake ahead of the original M-20 4-speed trans and new 3.08 posi 12-bolt (from a '70 SJ GP). All its needs is to have the hood reinstalled and it's ready to drive!

I'm seriously thinking of adding power steering since it is a handful to drive with all that power and manually shifting at the same time. It's fun, but you have to be careful!

Now onto doing the same thing to the GT-37 (new 455HO & 4-speed install).

I love sleepers, and this is seeming to be the king of sleepers right now.

Very cool.

Thanks Jonny! It would really be more 'sleeper' with it's original deluxe wheel covers on it...but, I hate the look of those things (lol)!

I have a couple sets of full wheel covers, generally speaking I too dislike them.

But just for conversation's sake, I did run a set while I was getting the car ready for paint work (it was my daily);
At the time I was running the rally wheels from my '80 Monte Carlo (RIP) - so the caps were enlisted to cover up the Chevy wheels.

That was a rattle cap paint job over top this:

I was living at a family members apartment building at the time, and I rattle can painted the car to make it look not so terrible.
I was running those Chevy wheels only because they had fantastic all season tires, while the Rally II's pictured above were bald, so I was making the best of being really broke at the time.

it wasn't supposed to!

poverty caps, or Rally II's for me!

BTW, I recently found out that the spare set of poverty caps I bought are 1971 specific;
They need a little loving, but if you're interested, let me know.

bought some reproduction RA manifolds years ago and are still running them but I had to massage quite a bit to just to get the internal outlet size to 2.25"....Im using mandrel bent 2.5" headpipes at the moment.If i hogged mine out to 2.45" like I guess some of the manifolds are now I wouldnt have any of the bevel left.

I believe there are at least three sources for them;
I can say from first hand knowledge the R.A.R.E. manifolds are beautiful.

I think it was late 80's or early 90's when I bought these.

I believe the R.A.R.E. manifolds only came out in the early 2000's.

Default 4 door hardtop Bermuda Blue

The car was sold, re-sold, before that latter deal fell through, and it was offered to me for $1500.

It is largely the 4 door hardtop version of SD455DJ's post sedan featured in this thread. It is originally the same exterior color, Bermuda Blue with black vinyl roof, 350 2bbl, though with 3 speed automatic rather than any manual transmission. The black vinyl is gone but one can see the contrast between the un-faded and faded Bermuda Blue paint.

It is intact, with some rust. No factory a/c. Idiot lights. Hubcaps, etc.

See photos added to this album:

https://www.facebook.com/douglas.wil...5474162&type=3

Shall ultimately upgrade to Lemans Sport interior, etc., improved drive-train, likely a 12 bolt with 400 Pontiac block with 4" or 4.25" stroke, MOLNAR rods.

But for now will likely freshen up the 350, stock 4 bbl, timing chain set...

Jonny & Scott, I have a set of 2.5 RA manifolds and the flange is very thin where the headpipe attaches, but seems to seal just fine. The manifolds on the Lemans aren't as nicely cast as the 2.5's, but the are still better than factory originals and seem thicker walled. I was surprised to learn they weren't RARE's, so maybe PY's or the other vendor's. The person I bought the motor from thought they were RARE's, but he had someone else purchase the parts and build the engine for him, so he didn't really know who's they were. They were purchased around 2008/09.

I was happy to see that I didn't have to hog the outlet's out since they were 2.30" (+) and I thought that was OK for what the rest of the exhaust system was comprised of (2.5" mandrel headpipes & "X", 14" case UltraFlo mufflers and then to decently bent 2.25" tailpipes.

Doug, Cool car! I wish I knew how many 4-dr 4-speeds were made (Tempest, Lemans, Lemans Sports) for 1970. I know they made 1 factory 400 4-speed '71 4-dr Hdtp and 3-seat wagon!
