I decided to do a little work on the hood before fitting the front sheet metal. It looked as though the hood was stored on its side in a wet area or possibly on dirt in a shed or something. About 3/4 length of the one side of the hood where the outer skin is attached to the inner skin it had rusted in between the 2 layers and had thick layers of rust scale to the point of spreading open the seam slightly. I cleaned it all out with a sharp pick and sandblasted all around the areas. Lucky the pieces are still solid enough to be ok. After sandblasting I treated the bare metal with a metal conditioner, then sanded scuffed and epoxy primered. Next step will be to squeeze some panel bond in a few areas of the spreaded side seam for a little extra strength and the close back tight. Then onto the top and finally start fitting the front sheet metal.

I put a little 3m panel bond between the inner and outer skins on the passenger side of the hood and squeezed everything tight back to where it should be and let set up for 24 hours then removed the clamps and sanded the edge so it now looks correct. The top side had a bunch of surface rust here and there so I sandblasted carefully to remove the heavier rust and primer. I DA sanded with 80 grit. Next I will hit it with a metal wash, fix some dents and epoxy prime the top side.

I treated the hood to a BASF acid wash, sanded some more and began the body work. I will finish the body work with 180g and epoxy prime then guide coat.

Epoxy is down on the top of the hood and will be ready to block sand. Next step will be to start bolting the front end on to refit everything then start on the doors and quarters and epoxy them. I will then block sand the and fix any remaining issues found then reprimer and block again

I took a break on the car to work on outer wheel houses, quarters, trunk drops and tail panel on my 74 super duty. I did assemble and fitt the front end, then removed. It has been block sanded, and touched up where needed. Doors have been stripped and am getting ready to epoxy them. The parts will be painted with a coat of Lucerne blue soon, then the shell painted separately and assembled.

I have a question for you, or anyone else who might care to speak up;

What is the way that hoods were painted originally?

I seem to often see paint being applied to the top of the hood, with the bottom masked off;
But I would think that paint would have been applied to the top and edges, with overspray observed on the underside.

If I am guessing correct, this picture shows that the top was painted, and the hood is upside down about to be masked for the edges to be painted.

Thanks. Our buddy has been helping some also when his shop is slow. Im not sure the technique from factory. In this case the blue you see is tinted primer on the top side. The hood was flipped, taped and painted rally black. Next it will be sprayed on the top and outside edges in topcoat.

Pretty sure they way we repaint our cars is no where near how the factory did.

Overspray is a indication that masking tape wasn't in the mix at the body paint station.
