Ya gotta steer clear of the fan! I like Engine Masters show a lot. Good to see some actual testing of ideas. I really thought the “dented headers” episode was pretty good. The thing I dislike about Roadkill is they just cobble crap together. Then go tear it up. They act like children. I have never understood how you can be “into cars” yet have absolutely no respect for equipment. Now, get off my lawn! My Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

They have plenty of engines and cars that are just about perfect. They just do 'roadkill' because that's the show. I watched a video they made about intakes on a dyno. Very informative. No BS. All facts backed up. |

I'm not sure how many know it, Dave is editor and chief of Hotrod mag and Mike is also and editor.

As has been said, Marty Palbykin sold the bones of his Pro Mod GTO after campaigning it, and after removing the turbo Stratostreak engine, then replacing it with a supercharged alky private label engine in it.
It was sold to Big Chief/Brand X, on this board so the car is now one of the featured cars on Street Outlaws owned by Justin Shearer, host of Street Outlaws. It now also has a turbo Pontiac Stratostreak V8 in it at this point and replaced the original Crow that Shearer wrecked a few years ago on the show. So Marty's tube chassis race car is still around, just switched owners and was again repowered by a true Pontiac engine. The fastest I could find for Pro Mod version, with the private label engine in it was a 6.32. |

That would be the original car that was totaled a few years ago, this is the ex Palbykin car now and Crow 2.0;

Getting back to "design flaw".
The design flaw is that the engineers who designed the Pontiac engine in or about 1953 did not anticipate a roller cam would be installed, 60 years later, that had so much lift and duration that the lifter bores would snap off as a result. Could it be the open design of the lifter valley was used to promote and ensure lifter lubrication?

During that time the engine was making a documented (Tom Earhart Dyno) 1600 hp, not 1200 hp. He also ran a best of 6.95 with the Pontiac Engine and cast iron heads. The chassis, 1970 GTO PRO MOD chassis, went into the high 5s in the quarter at Tucson, Arizona multiple times with the Brad Anderson Engine. So Chief would up with a GTO Chassis, By Jeff Covey, that was quite a bit better vs Chief's Crowmod deal even though the crowmod had a better aero number. Jeff Covey had built 8 or 9 Pro Mod Chassis before he did Marty's Car. Experience and chassis rework allowed Marty to go even quicker vs the Pontiac Engine runs. So a few on the comments above needed a bit of a correction. It was the second 6 second car with a Pontiac Engine after Beswick's car. Two years before anyone even came close to running those times even with a dragster chassis. Marty ran in the Pro Mod series in Tucson with the Brad Anderson in competitive events for several years. Not a Exhibition Car there. Chief made out like a Bandit on that deal. Tom V.

I welded up the weak open valley on an early '59 389 block, it is a weakness I believe, compounded by fitting lightweight ali intake manifolds. My 389 (turbo combo) block is still together, the engine made just under a 1000 hp, not a lot I know by today's standards, before I had to take it out because I forgot to put antifreeze in the engine - and the block cracked! I've repaired the cracks (front of the block just below the heads) and it pressure tested fine, it's sat there as a backup for the 'new' '59 block combo.
The new combo block will have a TIG brazed lifter valley this time, in an effort to reduce the amount of distortion caused to the lifter bores by the arc welding process. Pics are of the old 389 block with painted valley, and the other pics are of the 'new' 389 valley plates that I had laser cut from 6mm steel. This 'new' block will also have a mains girdle but I've modified the design a bit to make it stronger (even though there was nothing wrong with the old one- bearings and crank were all good. I'll update as I go along if anyone is interested. I've |

For the vast majority of Pontiyakkers, this "design flaw" is of no concern whatsoever. Honestly, how many people are building engines over 600 HP? How many are over 500 HP?

The idea of the girdle is to emulate a skirted/crossbolted bottom end, which along with the welded in valley should strengthen the block substantially. |

Do you want a design flaw? What kind of brainless engineer would make the exhaust manifold bolts go into the water jacket? Dodge did! It may not break but it’s really stupid and cheap. I have run into a couple big block dodges leaking antifreeze into the exhaust.
Ever changed plugs on a big block dodge that’s hot? You better be wearing asbestus gloves and sleeves, that’s if you can get to them under that stupid upside down manifold. Ever tried to get out a power steering pump or box out of one of these big block Cudas? That’s some real world design flaws that your average car guy is going to run into. I’m never going to build anything that will split the lifter valley. For those who do, there is a fix. |

Whaaaaaaat? Say it aint so. When I drive a 2nd gen, owned a few, they feel like they are just a 1st gens fat sister. lol Some like that.

By most reports the 2nd gens are just built a little better, less of a rattle trap. Now Im sure part of that with mine is I just started with a rough car. So the windows out out of alignment etc etc. But yeah, if I could take my motor and put it in a 70-73 I would. I don't hate my car, I just think I would like the other better. More head room, more likely to be disc braked, more exhaust options, more interior options.

Engineering actually got a block right with the 69-70 RA V 303 SCCA block.Filled in lifter bore area and reinforced thrust side in the block,4 bolt mains etc.Just never enough of them.Tom
