Oil change in safe T track rear end
I’ve never changed the oil in the stock rear end in my gto . It has the safe T Track with 390 gears . What oil do you guys recommend and how is the oil change performed ?
In. my 4 speed tranny I’m using sta lube 85-90 gl4 gear oil |

85-90 is good but stay away from synthetics especially for the rear Safe-T Track axle.
Some claim synthetics cause the transmission to be notchy but others have no problem with it. GL4 only for the Muncie. I remember seeing something several years ago that claims GL5 corrodes the Muncie synchros over a period of time. GL4 or 5 for the rear axle plus the GM Posi additive. I just drained the original oil from my non-posi rear axle a few months ago when it was rebuilt but I don't recommend 50 years between changes Depending on how many miles you drive, every 5 years or so should be sufficient. Might even be overkill

Gotta look pretty hard to find a rear-axle lube that doesn't have Posi additive already blended in.
No need to add "more" if what comes with the lube is enough. |

What year axle is it? Is it a cone type clutch?

You should only need just shy of three quarts for the rear axle.

Sta-Lube multi-purpose Hypoid GL-4 85-90W gear oil. According Ray Motyka a well known 10 bolt re-builder, use 15 oz of STP engine additive mixed into the gear oil and top off the axle with the GL-4 only. The older cone type safe-T-track units do not use clutches and need the cushion of the oil or premature wear will happen.

No Clutches, No Posi Lube needed.

The cones are what was used as clutches in the 8.2 axles back then. Ray has been rebuilding this type of posi for years and knows his stuff. Many of the stock racers that run this type unit depend on his experience to win and keep the rearend living.

Cone Clutch is NOT the same as the Clutch Pack used for a Limited Slip type diff. I think they changed the name to Brake Cone later on.

All the above statements are correct but to summarize: The gallon jug of Sta-Lube GL-4 you pictured would be just fine in your rear axle, no limited slip additive needed because it has a cone clutch. I have never heard of using an engine oil additive in a rear end, so no comment there. GL-5 gear oil is not recommended for cone clutch type limited slip rear ends because it has the limited slip additive already in it. Won't hurt anything really, but renders the limited slip unit less effective.

I think Big Cars used Clutch Packs? Tempest and Firebird Cones?

I'm reviving this thread because I finally got my 10 bolt limited slip installed and I'm about to fill it with oil. So to recap, 85 90 weight? Cone type clutch pack?
I already have the limited slip additive, ACDelco type. Do I not need it? Assuming it wouldn't hurt to use it since I have it?
