I loosened the screw on the clamp and tried fitting a puller onto it but I couldn’t get one on there. I have beat this damn thing with a hammer till I am red in the face and I got it to move an 1/8 of an inch maybe. Anybody got a trick to getting it off?

You must remove the bolt on the clamp completely. It will slide off then.

Yes the bolt must be fully removed, it fits in a shallow groove in the shaft for locating the rag joint properly. I also agree about buying a new bolt.

Unfortunately, since you beat on it, the upper seal on the steering box will probably leak now.

I agree. The procedure is to remove the bolt so that the coupler can slide off of the splines. Beating on the coupling with the bolt in place = Bayad, Mmkay?

There are Pontiac Shop Manuals that explain how to take things apart.
Do you own one? Tom Vaught

After removing the bolt I've always used pry bar/screwdriver between the ears to open the clamp up slightly
