I just can't see paying, in some cases, double the money for half the space for one of those counter depth units.

Not really a preference. I have a 1910 house and it has a small kitchen, and I'll gain a few inches over now. And yes, you seem to pay more for what you get with that type. The price of refrigerators in general kinda shocked me, yikes. I could buy a project car!

I just sold my WORKING 1947 Philco that was still in use, OUTSIDE next to my swimming pool for 5 years. I ROLLED it to the driveway; plugged it in at the garage and listed on craigslist. sold for 100 bucks. Worked fine; the compressor only pumped about once every minute or more. (You could hear the hiss)

I bought a house with a huge 1977 HOTPOINT fridge in the basement. still works fine.
I have a small kitchen so I bought a used Magic Chef fridge. it's a small, full sized fridge. has worked fine despite moving it on it's side.
I'm planning a kitchen overhaul but i'm reluctant to buy any appliances yet because of all of the UNNECESSARY mickey mouse electronics.

Then you must have 3 foot deep counters. Most homes don't.

I'd like to see a breakdown of reliability of new units between the basic no frills models and the fancy ones.

I wish they just had a manual defrost button. My modern fridge has a hinkey defrost .... seems like the only time it wants to come on is when the power is out and I plug in a generator ... then of course the 1500 watt defrost element insists on coming on.

Standard counters. Just doing the whole kitchen and the built in counter depth fridge makes a huge difference. The freezer is on the smaller side but I don't care

Several years ago I bought an LG fridge from Lowes and bought the extended warranty.
34 months into the warranty it stopped cooling.
I called Lowes, they sent a man out and said he would order the parts to fix it.
The next day Lowes said the parts were unavailable for my fridge.
They told me LG would take care of the problem.
LG/Lowes whoever sent me a check for the price of the fridge including tax.

Where/whatever you buy, BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY !

It paid off for me !!

Ya man, you get the benefit of them. You have same scenario as me with island. Coupled with my doing no out handles, I save 6 inches or so. In a small kitchen like mine, it is tangible for sure.

I wanted to paint my cabinets Mariner Turquoise but the wife wouldn't go for it. But, I did paint our bathroom as close to tiger Gold as I could get!

Purchased matching Samsung kitchen appliances a few years ago and they all had some design / reliability problems. Solved the ice buildup by wrapping bare copper wire around the defrost element and running it down the drain tube.

You're entitled to your opinion but there are many reasons people buy them. Designers favor the clean, built-in look without the refrigerator jutting out beyond the cabinets.

In my case I remodeled the galley-style kitchen in my 2 bedroom condo into a U-shape and placed the refrigerator centered in the U. A full-depth refrigerator would have made the cabinets on either side and the corner cabinets inaccessible.. The counter depth refrigerator made the layout possible with all cabinets accessible. I am single and have plenty of space in the refrigerator and freezer for all my needs.

As regards pricing, the Frigidaire Gallery counter depth refrigerator was only $100 higher than the equivalent full depth refrigerator.

I think we have nearly the same fridge. Only the doors stick out past the counter edge, It's also a Frigidaire counter depth, but likely older than yours. 15 years old this year & still going strong. The only issue I have with it is once in a while the ice maker will ball up and sometimes get jammed up with ice. been fighting with that for years & still does it from time to time. just a bad design. We leave the ice maker off until we need more ice. Auto mode is a crap shoot. Been great otherwise.

I just looked up the purchase date for my refrigerator on Lowe's website and found that when I bought it I also got the 5 year extended protection plan. Now, I have to find out if the 5 year plan started after the manufacturers warranty ended or if it was just 5 years from purchase date. If it is from purchase date I am out of luck but if it started when the manufacturers warranty ended then I am still covered. I bought the thing July 4 2014.

Yes, the doors have to protrude beyond the countertop edge so the doors can swing.

I called the 800 number for Lowes and one person tells me the warranty starts at the end of the manufacturers warranty and another tells me it starts the date of purchase. I am going to Lowes tomorrow morning and see what they say.

I didn't even think to look at the upper ice maker until I read your post My refrigerator has dual ice makers and we always use the bottom one. Sure enough, the upper one was froze up.

I ordered custom kitchen cabinets from BLowes. Terrible wood quality and workmanship and on top of that I had tp fight to get my money back. My daughter sends me a BLowes gift card every Christmas and I just grit my teeth.
