after 6 yrs at my current job they informed me my position was eliminated and last tue. was my last day. get this, it is my brother and nieces company. nice way to treat family but business is business. after 13 at one 6 at another then 6 there where each job came to me when i was not seeking one. i now for the first time in 25 yrs i have to actively look for employment. what a odd and scary feeling. a small severance pay and unemployment should see me through. if you want to send some good vibes my way ill take em.

I feel your pain. After college, I was with the same company for almost 17 years. There were rumors of layoffs, but it was a shock to me when I was tapped. The good news is it led to even a better job two months later, with a sign on bonus. But the initial shock was horrible feeling. I feel for your brother and niece as well, since it can't be easy laying off someone, especially somebody related to you. Small business can't go on for long when they are operating with a loss. Good luck, I hope you find a better job quickly.

First, sorry this happened to you, and best wishes for bigger and better things. Also, if I had your skills in the field you're in, I think I'd look at getting on board with, or starting your own company that helps restaurants make the move towards surviving pandemic situations. Adding drive thrus, new creative space utilization etc.

+1 on the last one. I’d start a competing business.

It sounds like you have more than enough skills and experience to come up with something pretty quick. It just sucks that you have to. Good luck with it!

You probably won't believe me, but I gave up counting after 50 employers - sometimes I worked 2 jobs, tried my hand at my own business twice, and had a number of employers all in the same field. Used to be a lot of factory work in my youth so it was easy to jump ship. Most of all the companies I have worked for are no longer in business - so even if I had stayed, they would not have.
The scary part is going from a daily routine knowing you have a job to the unknown - what am I going to do now? Can be overwhelming if you start to overthink it or go into panic mode. I once got down to my last $35.00, yes, $35.00 and had sold most of what I could and was looking at living in the back of my car for a while. But just as I thought I was done for, I landed a job and began immediately and everything moved forward from that point. Scary, you bet. The last job I lost had me taking 5 months to find my present job which I have been at 12 years. Again, scary looking every day for a job that pays better than your unemployment knowing your unemployment is close to running out and taking an $8.00 job just won't cut it. Jobs also become harder to land as you get older, sucks. The key is not to give up and don't kick back and rely on the severance pay or unemployment. Right now you may get the $400.00 a week from the Government ($300 Fed/$100 State) plus your state's unemployment check - so you will have a solid income. If you make under 100K a year, the Government has stopped taking out Federal taxes right now. So that is another plus. In your field of work, you should not have a problem getting employed even if it means a spin-off from what you would normally do. Keep all options open. Not sure if you are rooted or can pick-up and move to a more flourishing area. Sometimes moving can bring more opportunities. So do not sink into the mode of "despair" and get depressed. Move forward at first chance and give yourself some time to find a job you want instead of need. I always shoot for about 3 months. Often, when 1 door closes another opens and then I find myself in a better job and wonder why I didn't leave my last one sooner. Jobs today do not last like our father's generation - cut-backs, lay-off's, job outsourcing, and companies flat out going out of business or overseas. So my company sees me as an employee with a clock number and don't have any loyalty to me and my family, so I see my company the same way - I don't have any loyalty to them and if the right opportunity comes around, I'm gone. |

I know how you feel. Here is a short story. Daughter got married on Sat. My wife got a call at the wedding that her mother was not doing too good and to get there. Mom died 2 days later then two days later on the day of the wake my boss called me and said I do not have a job. To top it off we were selling a house and getting another smaller one. My wife had quit her job years ago to care for her mom. So in a matter of 6 days a wedding , a funeral, lost my job, and had 2 mortgages, And nobody was working. Good luck to you.

Sorry to hear your situation, family should treat you better? Had some challenging times in my work life the last ten years. Work was going good and two different company's shut the doors. I recently got laid off from work and at 51 it is very concerning. Keep your chin up and you will get thru it!

Start your own business. I quit my job working construction for a relative after seven years. That was in 1977, I never looked back, best thing I ever did. I just shut my business down two years ago and retired debt free. It’s not easy, you have to be self motivated and responsible. One thing I never did was spend money before it was earned.

When I got laid off in 2001, I came home to my pregnant wife and said:
"A legend and an outta work bum look a lot alike!" Funny how there is a quote from Smokey and the Bandit to fit almost any life situation.....

This is America, there is gold in the streets, you got to go get it though, nobody's going to hand it to you... I wake up and get down on my knees and pray to my employer, I have never been without since I started doing this...
