Default Oil pump intermediate shaft

Went to install oil pump and intermediate shaft will not go into pump, tried couple shafts and no luck, pump is m54f I got from Butler. Was going to hit shaft with sandpaper to see if only needs a little taken off for clearance. Thought I would check here first to see if anyone else has had this issue.

Any chance the shaft alignment pin on the pump is bent for some reason? That's about the only reason I can think of for it not fitting. I guess it's possible the cast-in loop in the block could be mashed in or tweaked in some way that won't allow the shaft to align. Check those two items.

You really need to have a bit of clearance vs it WILL JUST GO IN.

Have you miked the stem that sticks above the flat tang in the oil pump and measured the hole size drilled in the intermediate shaft?

Install the intermediate shaft on the pump and then insert it into the distributor shaft if the engine is out of the car.

Try those two pieces first. Then when it is installed try the distributor shaft into the intermediate shaft.

Only one way to install it from the top....grind off the small tangs sticking out from each side (near the bottom).

Bad idea really unless you forgot to install the thing and now the engine is installed in the car.
As mentioned in my post and by others, no way will that oil pump intermediate shaft go past the
intermediate shaft support collar cast into the block and seat properly without grinding off the tabs.

THEN IF YOU NEVER TOUCH THE DISTRIBUTOR, YOU MIGHT BE OK.
IF YOU TRY TO REMOVE THE DISTRIBUTOR YOU HAVE A 50/50 CHANCE
THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT WILL COME LOOSE FROM THE DISTRIBUTOR
GEAR AND DROP DOWN INTO THE OIL PAN.

So then your choices would be remove the engine and do it right or

1) Buy another intermediate shaft, grind off the tabs, install it and never remove the distributor again.

2) Course if you sell the car to another Pontiac guy tell him do not pull the distributor of you might have two oil pump shafts in the oil pan.

I don’t think the Butler shaft has ears to grind off !?

This happened to me before. But i saw that issue when i was mocking up the engine. I had to file the inner groove of the shaft to give some clearance as it is too tight to fit the oil pump. GL

And that’s the proper way to do it, not make the drive tang on the oil pump shaft thinner!

I have had to modify a few aftermarket pump drives. The slot was a bit narrow and no taper on the edges for the pump radius.

I have fixed modified GM oil pump shafts by tack welding a thick wall washer on to the shaft below the retention ring on street engines. Lots of removed oil pump shafts that are still perfectly good (no mods necessary) that would allow many many miles of use on a street car with a normal 60 psi oil pump.
