I have a couple of Y88 cars that I drive.

One is a factory 400/auto car that I've owned since around 2002. I have the original engine/transmission but the car currently has a trans am 455 and 4 speed. Original Y88 Trans Am parts were used from a wrecked car in the 4 speed conversion and looks factory. It is a great running/driving car.

The other is a factory Y88 4 speed WS6 car. It needs restored but runs and drives great. The engine and wheels are both incorrect. Both were gone before I bought the car. It has a 455 but still has the original 4 speed and 3:42 rear. I'm torn whether to keep it as it is and just drive it or restore the car.

I hope to be driving my Y88 by spring of 2023. It is being restored in my garage. I have the shell sitting on 4x4s and wheel dollies.

Am curious is anyone has experience with the bird hood decal offered by Phoenix Graphix and sold through Ames and others? The one I bought does not match the one on my car.. I showed it both to Ames and to Phoenix Graphix and they both say it is the right one, yet it does not match the one on my car ( original paint ). has anyone experienced this ? thanks

My understanding is that the Y88 got the "5 shades" bird that later got introduced across all colors in '79.

Can you tell us what's different between the two decals or post up pictures? Here a page that has a goo run down of all the second gen decals. https://www.hitmantransam.com/Pages/decals.htm

Yes, that is my understanding as well. The yellow parts of the decal on my car ( original ) are outlined in yellow. On the repop decal it is solid yellow. Will post pics. thanks

I hope these pics can be seen well. I can send larger images through email direct. [email protected]

The repop decal has the yellow as a solid. My car has the yellow as an outline.
Can anyone confirm this?
Does anyone also have an original hood decal on a Y88 to share and show detail?

am not sure what to do. I do not have a lot of option it seems but, was hoping this decal was correct for the application. It seems I have a 79-81 TA decal and not a 78 Y88

anyone know?

This is a zoomed in picture of my original 78. Not sure if this shows enough detail though? Unfortunately I don't keep the car stored at home or I would take a fresh pic for you. might be able to do that soon though.

First of all Steve you've got one heck of an eye for detail. I think I'm picking up what you're putting down with regard to that extra outline you have. I've never seen that style before! Here's a better shot of the PG bird outside of the wrapper for comparison-it looks very much like 68ragtop's-

.

I know you said you believe the car to have original paint? We do know Pontiac had problems with the early shade of gold and some cars had to be repainted at the dealer (or whatever body shop the dealer used). I wonder if there's a chance that happened to this car and the decal was replaced? If i remember correctly it took a long time for companies like Stencils and Stripes and Phoenix Graphics to start producing accurate decals for these cars.

I would also be curious to know if it was a really early VIN which at least could entertain the possibility of it being a pilot version of the package with a preprod version of the bird. Unlikely, yes, but if the VIN is really early I'd wonder until it's ruled out.

Do the sail panel birds match it or the new decals?

I picked these up at a swap here in the D for my YEE, PG sent me the smaller gold birds with are wrong along with wrong shaker decals. Now I kinda like the smaller 1980 sail birds. Talked to the owner for like an hour, he just sent me what he wanted.

I had my annual cars and coffee this past Saturday, John Schinella stopped by, he said the Gold he wanted they didn’t put on the Y88. He’s trying to see if the Paint formula can still be had. I want to make some mixed and do a spray out of his ahold he wanted.
He did sign the factory paint in the trunk.

Getting ready to do body work.

Is there a registry for the Y88's to show how many may be left that are actually alive?

Default Gold tinted t-tops

I finally got the last piece of the puzzle for my Y88. A NOS Gold tinted t-top, drivers side. I found the NOS passenger side about 14 years ago.

I also have a set of NOS Gold tinted glass that I am putting into a set of frames. This will give me two sets of gold tinted t-tops that have never been installed on any trans am.

These have been listed in the "What have you done with your pontiac today".

We need a y88 forum here. Everything is mixed into a board.
Found 7 yds of GM Lombardy, looking for someone to make me new covers
Also, I recently found a book at a swap that has alot of y88 info and pics in.

We need a YEE board instead of a YEE thread.

Do the Y88 gold t-tops have DOT etching that state they are Gold like the silver anniversary t-tops?
