I just read a news item about Toyota's EV work. Whether all this will happen on their timeline is anyone's guess but it shows the technology is still rapidly evolving.

Toyota just unveiled plans for new electric vehicle battery technology that could offer up to 900 miles of driving range, and many are calling it a potential game-changer.

At a recent briefing, the company announced big news about new solid-state EV battery tech. Saying it simplified production of the material used to make solid-state batteries, the company plans to roll out a model by 2025 that will extend cruising range by 20%.

A higher-performance version is still under research and development but has the potential to deliver 50% more cruising range — over 900 miles, according to Toyota. That could get you from New York to Chicago and then some, and charge time would be just 10 minutes.

It seems as that is where the big break throughs will happen. The materials to build the current batteries are in short supply and a lot of it is in countries that don't really like us. Battery technology is rapidly changing but without a more robust grid, it may still take time for more adoption by most of the population. I was going to another building the other morning, past all of the EV charging stations. That building has probably 40 or more spaces. They were all full when another EV was coming in and had to drive around, hopefully to find an open charging point someplace else nearby. What happens when you can't charge your car at work when you were counting on doing so? You can't drive to the corner and top off the charge at the gas station. It made me wonder. They are supposed to move their vehicle when it is fully charged but the EV charging spots are right near the building so I could see people not wanting to move their car during the latter part of the day to a spot much further away from the building. I just read about a new problem for EV's. Evidently, the same wonderful people who steal your catalytic converters, are now stealing the charge cords from EV chargers. That will be another nuisance for the charging network.

Here's a test to see if your area is ready for electric cars. Ask Seri on your phone or do a Google search for the following, population of your County and how many cell phone charinging stations are available.

Correct, the are listing 6 EV charging stations currently available in my County. If only 1/4 th population Knox County owned an EV, that's 2620 EV's per charging station (if my math is correct).

Someone tell me how that's going to work?

In 1969 one magazine writer hated the spoilers on the Judge, and the T/A when they were introduced. Pontiac sales literature said at 100 MPH the spoilers exerted 100 lbs of downforce. The smart assed writer said, "A cement filled spare tire would have the same effect on downforce". So yes there was some bad press for those cars too back in the day.

Today we all have become accostomed to the rear wings on the 69 T/A, and Judge. They are highly sought after to make clones of either of those cars, so much so that I believe there are 3 aftermarket versions of them, but the OEMs will bring the most money.

I was fortunate enough to be very good friends with the the parts manager at my local Pontiac dealer, where I did my Co-op training while in the auto mechanics course at our local Vo-tech. If he had parts that were ordered and never picked up, he would sell them to me for the balance owed from the downpayment required to order parts in. I bought a new GM rear Judge spoiler for $35. I also bought a Ram Air hood pan, and air cleaner for a 68 Firebird for the same price. I also bought a pair of GM chrome 389 65 GTO valve covers for $20 for the pair. The good old days.......

I've spent quite a few years working on aerial lift vehicles, as well as forklifts. Many of those units were in enclosed industrial settings so they were required to run clean. That entails using either propane, or electric to keep from poisoning the workers. Propane is a clean fuel but if the building is tight with no, to little air exchange from outside, the fumes can build up, and cause problems. That leaves electric battery powered machine with no emissions.

Industry many time runs 3 shifts and 24 hours a day, electric vehicles can usually make 6-8 hours before running dead. You can't duplicate 3 complete units to cover a 24 hour period, too costly. Industry has figured a way to refuel their electric vehicles in minutes. They have 2-3 batteries for each vehicle, and swap them out with fresh batteries. If EVs ever want to bypass the recharging problem they're likely going to have to figure a way to swap out batteries, in lieu of recharging one set over, and over, with the attending downtime. Most batteries will have a longer life cycle when charged slowly over rapid charging.

I can see a company similar to a propane cylinder exchange company that owns the batteries, and is responsible for their upkeep, and removal from service when the unit is in need of rebuilding, or replacement.

EVs are just in their infancy, and need to work through some of the detracting problems. I surmise they'll get some of the major bugs worked out, but the world is still going to need hydrocarbon powered vehicles too. Electric industrial vehicles have been around for many decades, there are still a need for ICE powered vehicles too. The electrics have downsides too that just are to complicated, or expensive to scrap every ICE unit, and go 100% EV. The material handlers realize that you need each, in it's own application, maybe the greenies will eventually realize it too.

The plan to do away with all ICE vehicles by 2050 isn't at all based in facts, it's somebody's dream, not rooted in reality. The dreamers have no concept of what it would take to make all EVs in 30 years. they have only thought this out, about as far as the end of their noses, the rest of the reality hasn't even been considered.

Funny thing is the zero pollution will never happen, as electric is just a way to burn hydrocarbons to generate electricity, and pass the energy along another medium. You're still burning hydrocarbons to make the energy, another lawmakers folly.

with the F 150 still in the number 1 spot

Toyota dropped position as the Corolla and RAV 4 were both replaced as the best selling non truck vehicles in the USA by the Model Y.

The Model Y is on track to possibly sell more than 1 million units in 2023,


Tesla has already delivered 879,000 Model y and 3s combined so far in 2023

Of Course there are a whole lot more New Unsold F150s sitting on dealers Lots than any model Tesla.

Ford has over 100 days on the lot average right now with the F series. from Cox automotive July 13th:

The Ford F-150 Lightning closed June with an 88 days’ supply, below the supply count for all F-Series pickups, which is above 100 days. The Mustang Mach-E had 116 days’ supply.

As we're now in the second quarter of the year, automakers have been reporting their sales numbers. Tesla, which we covered on Monday, is far and away the leader when it comes to electric vehicle sales in the US. But as more and more automakers are bringing new EVs to market, Tesla's market share is eroding, from 72 percent at the beginning of last year to 54 percent now—and it may fall to less than 50 percent over the next few weeks. Which of those other automakers are managing to move metal? We took a look through the Q1 sales announcements to get an idea.

While most automakers have published their Q1 2023 sales, this is not a universal list. In particular, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Lucid, and Genesis have yet to reveal those numbers as of April 5. And the manufacturers don't all break out data in the same way, either lumping all EVs together (looking at you, General Motors) or grouping different powertrains together (as is the case with the Kia Niro and Hyundai Kona).

It's also helpful to remember that, other than Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid, all the other automakers have product lines other than battery EVs, so such a company probably isn't going out of business next week because it only sold 3,000 EVs in three months. Supply chains still aren't back to what was considered normal pre-pandemic, and it's worth remembering that in most cases, these are global products. There are severe penalties for automakers who don't sell enough EVs in Europe and China, unlike here in the US. So in cases of finite supply, those markets will receive priority when it comes to deliveries—every EV you sell in the US is an EV you can't sell in Germany, after all.
General Motors is best of the rest

General Motors had a good Q1 this year, selling "more than 20,000 EVs," according to a press release that does not provide any more granularity to that figure. But a little digging reveals that the vast majority of these were Bolt EV and Bolt EUV sales, with 19,700 vehicles finding homes in the first three months of 2023. That's up from 358 for Q1 2022, when the cars were taken off the market for some time due to a battery manufacturing defect.

Cadillac has delivered almost a thousand Lyriq SUVs so far this year, but the same cannot be said for the GMC Hummer EV. That's due to a production issue that shut down production of the Hummer from last October until the end of January. The BrightDrop Zevo 600 delivery van was also affected by that recall/stop sale, but BrightDrop says it has started shipping the first 500+ vans it built this year.
